Nectar Hive Estat

Sajeev, I received today a Mjolnir-modified Stax 006t and am quite happy with the way it drives the Pollinators. Thanks for offering great, affordable estat headphones!

I’m very pleased with Birgir’s (Mjƶlnir) work. My SRM-T1S drives the Hive well. It’s an earlier version of what you have, but I needed both pro and normal bias so I could drive my SR5n STAX.

Makes me wonder if I will eventually want more. Probably not on my budget.

Very nice, but most people put the tube socket on top, not in the front.

Not a tube socket, front is the stax plug

That’s what I do for humor… My tube sockets have more pins.
Any teaser specs?
How much battery? Does it get warm? Is there a plug-in option?

Lol, tube in front is actually a cool idea, maybe double as a flash light or space heater.

Need to do a formal spec sheet but waiting on some parts to finalize it. Will build another with a different parts and spec that as well.

Battery life is about 6-8 hours. Rechargeable and battery is replaceable.

The THD+N for this mini is about 0.2%. I built a larger one with 0.02% THD but I prefer this smaller one. The larger xformer one extends to about 15kHz and this smaller one extends to closer to 20kHz. Bass is low on both down to 20Hz measured. Extension is based on about +-1.5dB. Both are quite loud. Bias is at 600V fixed and regulated. 4.7meg ballast resistor for the bias. 4.7k series resistors at the +- outputs.

Does not get warm. Draws about 0.11 Amps while listening.

I live life on the edge and suggest you put 4 active tubes upside down as feet for the amp.

LoL keep the ideas coming

Need to make the battery interchangeable. Like the battery on my GODOX electronic flash. If you could use an existing form factor like that, you could have a door to swap batteries, and people could use an external charger to keep spares ready. No re-inventing the wheel.

@nectarsoundnet I was searching for planar drivers earlier today and came across your post on Reddit where you mentioned (I believe for the first time) that you had made a planar driver and thought ā€œthat name sounds familiarā€

Great to see the progress you have made since then!!

Hi - The Planars were made by the guy I was replying to. He is in England and was working on his planar drivers. I still haven’t gotten a chance to try them though. But I should reach out to him.

It’s been 3 months when I got these estats. Wow they are so superb nice headphones to own. If you don’t like them at first glance, it can be easily tuned with modifications to different beast. Stock tonality is natural/bright but can be tuned to warm/natural or natural with fast treble that I prefer.

First think is to listen the headphones atleast couple days before considering doing anything. Then if you want a greater comfort get round 100mm sheepskins. Sound is very close to stock pleathers. Now it’s get more interesting if you want a warm sound. Get oval 100mm sheepskins. And they can get tuned to more even and brighter to neutral with simple modifications. You lose a bit bass but then gaining superior treble. And if you u are not statisfied enought you can lastly EQ to make them more flat and natural to ears.

Edit. Added links to the earpads.

I haven’t gone with any alternate pads yet, although given that Nectar just uses an aftermarket pad to begin with, I’m open to it. Would appreciate pointers or URLs to what you have used.

I think they just get better and better for the first few months of use. I haven’t gone TOTL with anything yet - my internal alarms go off at about 1K for headphones ($5k for ebikes) and so far I’ve obeyed them. But the Nectar Hive is my current fave, even though the Grado RS1e gets more time because of it’s easy to drive portability. I guess someday I’ll have to pull the trigger on a Focal or ZMF, but that time hasn’t come.

I edited my post. Forgot to add the links. Pleather is a good vegan choice but it hardens after a while.

If you are interested in my modifications and not just pad swaps. If u do it u need to use exactly the same stuff otherwise it alters the sound a lot. Even the slightest difference can cause treble going worse.

Firstly I did this: I added some kinesio tape on the inside and on the sides. Then lastly I added high density foam to the inside (it’s working like a spacer). It’s 3mm thick and a good quality that does not leave resin when touching.

I use these modifications with the oval sheepskins.

I put these pads on mine, which are similar to the ones included, but perforated (edit: on the inside part). I’d originally bought these for the Stax SR-007 MK2 and they were my favorite pads on those too.
