Agree. Also, I came very close to pulling the trigger on some 1.7s this week. If I could put them someplace my kids wouldn’t be able to stab them they’d be in my house now.

Likewise. Google’s as much a disappointment as Apple is in terms of phones nowadays. The periscope and offline Assistant functionality is cool, but the new Pixels aren’t nearly a compelling package.

PacMan was OK on the Atari 800, but Missle Command and Star Raiders were the awesome games. The 800 could also do a damn good job with Centipede, Frogger, and the rest. WICO, the same company that made commercial controllers for arcades made joysticks and trackballs for about $50 each. They had microswitches inside, and I’ve never seen one die. I still have a some, but can’t find a worthy interface or game these days to use them on.

The 1.7s are very nice. I don’t have kids, but I have a cat, which is the only reason I haven’t succumbed to the 3.7i with a bass panel. That, and the hope that maybe I’ll get something Wilson Audio. I think the Sasha DAW would be ideal but for the price tag. And the Maggie is not precisely a “compromise”.

I had watched this movie during flight from Seattle to Seoul yesterday.
It is really wonderful story about guitar master who is not willing to sell his 6 million $ building to keep this shop.
The intermittent play by nice guitar players to test guitar offered in the shop are also amusing.
Highest recommendation to guitar aficionados.

The older I get … the more I find I want less shit hanging around.
This applies to both physical shit and, more recently, digital shit. It’s just too much of a pain to organize, store and manage.
And it is a feeling, or desire, that has grown ever stronger with every passing year.
So … I’m sitting looking at almost 6TB of Needledrop files (both the original raw hi-res captures, and the processed/converted/de-clicked/tagged/split/FLAC encoded final files) … and realizing that I could just BUY hi-res digital copies of all of that, and only need 500GB for it all.
If I want the “analog” sound, I’ll just spin the bloody vinyl (which I AM keeping, for now) …
This also means I can ditch the digital recorder, and stop wasting the first couple of hours with any new album playing it twice to record it before getting to properly enjoy it!
(This also makes me want to start selling off at least 11,000 of the 12,000+ LPs I have in storage).

I get that. I used to say “storage is cheap” but so, I suppose, are packing peanuts. Now I have two NAS servers and a drawer full of drives that all say something like “Archive4834 - DO NOT DELETE”.

Primary laptop out of commission. It’s got a fan issue, so it won’t boot, repair will probably be a week or so. Meanwhile I’ll be accessing here on iPad and iPhone, and Mac. So I might be scarce for a bit.

More annoying tech failures
I went to print a grocery list this morning, and my HP OfficeJet Pro informed me that the printhead was missing or had failed. Apparently not an unusual thing when I looked around the net. No easy fix, and a replacement printhead was $100, plus I would need to recycle existing ink…
A new printer seemed more effective. After all, I no longer had need for the high-volume two tray all in one behemoth. I mucked about online, and HP was saying they had a special on the 5525. Their online sales person was very anxious to get me to buy it for the sale price of $139.99. I called Staples and they had it for $79.99. So I went local.
My Sager laptop ought to be fixed Monday or so they say, but it ain’t fixed now. At Staples, I saw an HP Envy Photo 7100 on sale for $99, usually $179. Since my better half likes the photo capability, I went for that. My only real requirement was full duplex.
So I lugs the new thing home and starts to set it up. OY OY OY
HP’s app in the Mac store DOES NOT WORK ON MAC OS CATALINA. And apparently they know it. It “requires 10.12 or later” for the most recent version, but Catalina - the current version is 10.15, and it won’t even load.
Lots of 1 Star comments about this. So I figured I’d just wire it up to the Mac, but it DOES NOT HAVE ETHERNET, as apparently the “Tech Dweeb” at Staples can’t tell the difference between a USB and Ethernet port on sight. I took his word for it. Well, I have some USB cables… and a hub. But I didn’t quite connect it.
See, the setup of the printer is done using the HP Smart app. So I grabbed my iPad, loaded the app and set up the printer, connecting it to the wi-fi network. So far so good. Then I went into the Mac OS settings, and was able to see the printer. Apparently Apple has a driver in Catalina that works just fine.
There were many comments that people could not connect using Catalina. And there are certainly no instructions either in the App Store, or at HP Support. HP Support forum is a total mess on this. Apparently most HP software must be 32 bit, because scanning isn’t supposed to work either. Unless you use the Apple scan stuff that comes with the OS.
It’s worse than some of the least reputable headphone forums. Haven’t seen anybody suggest setting up like I did, on mobile device, then just using common sense.
I might not even have noticed had my windows laptop been in place.

YAY! Laptop fixed, and the new fans are blessedly quiet. MUCH better than before. I have bliss using headphones near the old machine again.

One day I was going to do an Intel show. So I was excited to be able to ask the Intel people questions on the computers because I deal with them to connect devices to them like projectors and audio systems. So when the day came I got to ask the Intel people questions. Their answer was it’s a computer thing. I said it’s okay you can talk to me as a technician I’ll understand. They said you don’t understand it’s a computer thing. You can have almost identical computers side by side on the line coming out of the factory and they measure slightly differently and they act slightly differently. Because of the complexity they’re all a little different. It’s a computer thing.
