What headphones do you have in your collection and why?

The Sennheiser 6** series are a definite classic. It seems like the quintessential pair that every hifi music lover should have (though I’ve never owned a pair!)

Edit: Have tried the Porta Pros with the Yaxi pads? They really enhance the comfort tremendously and improve the SQ quite a bit. Especially the highs.

(They can also be found on Amazon)

New member here. Hi everyone

  1. Sennheiser HD598. My first entry to this hobby. I’m still using this daily at work.
  2. LucidAudio LS31. Gotta have something wireless for house cleaning.
  3. Sony 1000XM3. Travelling partner.
  4. Sennheiser HD6XX. Daily driver. There’s something special when paired up with tube amp. It’s like +5 levels up out of nowhere.
  5. Hifiman Ananda. Planar. Quench my curiosity.

In order: Verite Open. @Resolve , this is your doing :joy:

Welcome @Audio_Prom you have a great collection! I have heard great things about those Sony ANC headphones for traveling. I also love the 6XX, and I am still needing to try mine out with a Tube amp!

I think you will really love the Hifiman Ananda’s, one of my current favorite headphones now.

Thanks for the warm welcome guys :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

Yeah I don’t know what’s with HD6XX + Tube amps. It’s dirtier but damn it’s delicious! Just like unhealthy food.

I love my Ananda too but I can’t help to feel like I’m going to scratch the paint one of these days. My metal stand is not helping either :grimacing:

I keep mine on a wood stand, no issues yet but they are babied.

This topic exploded and I missed most of it but anyway, I’m not going to list everything I own but I’ll list the important ones and why I have it:

Sennheiser HD600 - This is my reference pair of headphones. It’s the gold standard for me on tuning, as well as comfort and longevity. I use it as a neutral, coherent tuning baseline. It’s also just a wonderful sounding gear.

ZMF Verite - This is my totl headphone I own. I have it because it’s warm body and laid back tuning as well as relatively light weight make it a great headphone for listening over long periods, while it’s speed and resolution make it also great for critical listening. It’s also a pretty thing to look at.

Fostex TR-X00 Ebony - This is my daily driver at work when I don’t use In-Ears. With aftermarket leather pads, it becomes a comfortable, low clamping pressure and lightweight headphone that I can wear for hours without a hitch, and it’s balanced tuning is laid back that I can dont have any listening fatigue whatsoever. It’s not the best resolving thing out there, but that’s okay for multi-tasking. It also leaks a little bit of noise in, which is just perfect for me at work where I am constantly visited by colleagues.

Sony WH-H900N - This is a simple over-ear wireless headphone with active noise cancellation. I use it solely for travel. It’s got a balanced/harman neutral sound signature that is appealing without being overly bloated and bassy, and it supports LDAC and has good noise cancelling.

qdc Anole VX - This is my hi-res flagship IEM that has 8 switch positions to mess around with has really solid resolution that is better or on par with my Verite. It’s got a warmer body but has enough energy that makes it a nice overall sound for me. Like the Verite, the soundstage isn’t just wide but it’s also deep which gives it a holographic soundstage. It also fits like a champ.

Hidition Viento - Reference - I actually dont have this yet, and I haven’t even listened to it, but it’s on order and its a custom built IEM so I am hoping it becomes my reference IEM, much like the HD600. It also has 4 switch locations which provide it a diffuse field neutral, and a harman neutral tuning, and people rave about its coherency and resolution, so I’m excited to finally try this in the next few weeks.

Samsung Galaxy Buds - Because it’s true wireless and it sounds very pleasant, fits extremely well, and works flawlessly. It’s really an ideal budget/low end IEM that can replace all under $400 IEMs for me.

Sony WF-1000XM3 - This is my travel companion for in-ears, much like the WH-H900N above. Its strictly for travel and has great ANC and sound is really excellent for being bluetooth, and not even using LDAC. Battery life could be better, but it works.

I have some other headphones and IEMs as well, but these are my main staples. I will throw out a special mention to the Tin T4 as I think it’s an EXCELLENT IEM for under $100.

I also recently sold my HE560 planar and I am looking to replace it. I miss already having a Planar around which can reach deep into the sub-bass region with low distortion and speed. I preferred using planars for electronic music and movies. Need to get me an Arya or something.

Nice! Really want a pair of Fostex, in particular to Lawton Mod. I think Lawton’s mod has flown under the radar.

Sony MDR-V6
My first pair of headphones that opened my eyes to quality recordings. I keep these around for plugging in to test out new tubes and for nostalgia.

thinksound ms01
Purchased for travel and use at work. Love the warmth and step up in sound quality over iPhone ear buds. Pretty decent isolation for work/traveling. I was attracted to the stylish wood and eco-friendly construction. These were my daily driver for several years at work. I rarely use them now as I got tired of being tethered to the desk, so they were replaced with…

Sennheiser HD1 (Momentum 2.0) Wireless Bluetooth
My first foray into ANC and wireless headphones. Before purchasing, I compared these to the V-MODA Crossfade wireless, Sony 1000-XM3, Bose QC35 II, B&W PX7. These were my favorite balance of comfort, build, sound quality, and convenience (and they were on sale). This is the only ANC headphone I’ve tried that doesn’t hurt my ears immediately and I can use for extended periods of time at work without discomfort. I still very much enjoy the sound and build quality of these headphones (even after trying much more expensive headphones) and they are my daily driver at work.

Sennheiser x Drop 58x
After realizing there was a better sound out there than the MDR-V6, I started my quest for an upgrade for desktop listening that was the best “bang for the buck” at or under $200. I spent several months researching these, which took me down a path to learn all the basics around DAC’s and amps. I decided on these over the 6xx due to feedback on better sub-bass, fast response, imaging (for gaming), and cost - it was a very tough choice that took me weeks to make. I got the Topping D10 and the JDS Labs Atom for a complete desktop setup for under $300. As my first open back headphone, my jaw dropped (and still does) listening to acoustic guitar and vocals. These headphone drove me further down the rabbit hole, researching higher end models that would be “true upgrades” and not just side-grades. Which led me to…

ZMF Aeolus
I met @TylersEclectic after realizing he was in the area, who graciously let me try a bunch of his headphones that I was considering (including the LCD-GX, Focal Clear, HD800, and the Aeolus). While I very much enjoyed the other headphones, there was something about the ZMF that called to me… perhaps it was the unique wood construction and great build quality (that attracted me to the thinksound ms01), the fact that they are made by one passionate guy who is able to rival the sound quality of well established companies with much larger R&D budgets, or the lusciously smooth, warm, and impactful sound… Either way, I ended up getting a b-stock ziricote & steel Aeolus with the perforated suede universe pads. I’ve had the Aeolus for 4 months now and am totally hooked. All of the qualities I enjoyed about the 58x are there, but on a whole other level. I was inspired to build a custom matching ziricote Bottlehead Crack + Speedball that I’ve been using for the past two weeks with various tubes. The BHC takes the Aeolus to an even more special place and am addicted to what the OTL tube amp brings out in these headphones. I am loving it so much I put down a deposit for a GOTL.

When I started out in headphones I used the same criteria…“best under XXX dollars” and read and read and chatted with folks that had these and then took the plunge.

After a dozen sets you get a fairly good idea of whats out there and start matching cans to gear objectively and subjectively…and the real fun starts!!

Longtime lurker and infrequent poster here.
What I have: Sennheiser HD6XX, HiFi Man HE4XX, Tin HiFi 2 and 4, KZ AS10 and ZS10 Pro, Status BT One, Koss Porta Pro, Sennheiser PX-100 II, and a few expendable IEMs for sweating on the rowing machine.
Driven by a variety of DAC/amps, including the Schitt Fulla and Ear Studio.
Why: The collection is as good as it is because I’m game, curious, and perhaps easily led by Drop and this forum… happily so. And the collection is no fancier than it is because my aged ears don’t hear nearly as discerningly as those of many people on this forum. But the hobby is a great pleasure when I’m walking, working, reading, thinking, rowing, etc.

I have had a few people ask me this on Twitter and Youtube comments, so I guess I can explain.

My collection is pretty dynamic, it changes a lot. But the things that I have in my collection that is not a review unit or something I personally purchased to review.

  1. Sennheiser HD6XX: No brainer headphone right here. The Massdrop version of the legendary HD650. This is one that I feel every audiophile should have in their collection. The pretty much universal reference.

  2. Sennheiser HD600: Similar reason to the HD6XX, however the HD600 is the one that I prefer more to listen to. I like the little bit of extra treble and mid range the 600 has to offer. Also sounds great on tubes. For the $180 I paid for it basically open box, have to have it in my collection.

  3. Sennheiser HD580 Precision: This headphone is a bit of a legend. This is what started the HD600 series. It is its own unique flavor of sound compared to the 650 and 600, and also a sound a quite enjoy. Really holds its own 27 years after release. Amazing to think how special these must have been back in 1993.

  4. Sennheiser HD800 SDR: The HD800 is a headphone that you will truly love or hate. While it does have many flaws, 6K peak, mid recession, and a far inferior timbre to the HD600 series, however it has a few things that it does that are stellar. The detail retrieval of the HD800 is truly near the top of the pack. While there are offerings that best it in terms of detail, for its price there is almost nothing that comes close. It also has a wide sound sounds that is very neat. It is a dry and analytical headphone that makes poorly recorded songs sound awful, but find the right track and your jaw will be on the floor.

  5. Hifiman HE-6 (4 screw): Truly one of the great planars of our generation. Known as the hardest headphone to drive by many, it certainly does take some power; mine is driven by a Schiit Vidar speaker amp. The HE-6 is not the most resolving headphone for the money, however it’s dynamics and presentation are second to none. It has one of the most realistic presentations of instruments I’ve heard in a headphone. Orchestral pieces with the imaging of this headphone is truly a thing to behold. Also when given proper power the slam and dynamics of the HE-6 are some of the best I have ever heard. Amazing headphone, but does suffer from the possibility of driver failures and a headband that is prone to breaking. I however, replaced my headband with a LCD-4 one for improved comfort and durability.

  6. ZMF Auteur Teak: This headphone is one that I do enjoy, however probably will not be keeping too much longer. The Auteur is a really good headphone, its tonality and timbre are exceptional and it features a warm and relaxing sound that is really nice to listen to. The only area where it lacks is detail. None of the ZMF headphones, perhaps shy of the Verite, have particularly great detail for the price-point in my opinion. With ZMF you are more paying for the tonality and the build. I enjoy listening to it, but I often find myself wanting more detail. Probably going to be replacing the Auteur with the Aurorus Borealis when that comes out.

  7. AKG K712 Pro: I have an older Austrian made pair of AKG K712 Pros. They are more for the collectability. I don’t listen to it a ton, but I do think it is a pretty decent headphone. Wide stage, and an odd 2K peak that give the mids a strange characteristic.

  8. AKG K371: This is a recent addition to my collection. I also own the K361 whose signature I actually prefer, however I still like the K371 a lot and it has better build compared to the K361. The 371 follows the Harman target, and as a cheap, portable, closed-back headphone. For $125 on Amazon, this thing is very impressive.

  9. Fostex TH-X00: The X00 is my fun headphone. Fun V shaped signature, Foster Biodyna slam, fun headphone all around. I modded mine to 2.5mm detachable cables.

  10. Creative Aurvana Live: Basically all the same reasons as the X00, but these are so cheap I just keep it around because why not? I’ll probably end up giving it to a friend or something.

  11. Advanced Alpha: This headphone I was given for free by someone when I bought a used pair of Neumann NDH-20 from them. He lost the other pads and the stock cable and said he hated. Man was he right, this is awful. One of the worst headphones I have heard. Really uneven peaky treble, grain, poor dynamics, just a terrible headphone all around. I am not selling it though because it was free.

  12. UERM Custom. This is my personal IEM. The UERM is a very neutral and analytical IEM and it sounds great. Really nice detail retrieval and a good overall tonality for an all BA IEM. Love the look and fit of my custom.

  13. JVC HA-FDX1: This one I am honestly not 100% sure I will keep in my collection as of now, but I am thinking I will. The FDX1 is an amazing offering from Drop. The amount of detail that IEM pulls for its $280 MSRP is astounding. Also has very nice tonality, swapable tuning filters, and Spiral Dot tips. I think I will end of up keeping this one just to have a cheaper universal IEM.

Other things I have in right now to check out are the Tin T4 and P1. Also have the classic Koss headphones, KSC75, Porta Pro, and KPH30i, because they are cheap and everyone likes at least one of them. Also have a Sennheiser HD25 I use for work. But either than a few other random earbuds and cheapo headphones, that is the extent of my current headphone collection.
