ZMF Aeolus - Open-Back Dynamic Headphone - Official Thread

Who am I to go against such wisdom?!?! I’m all about learning and adaptation and growth, so I will set my wallet free!

I’m dying to place my order now so I can finally enjoy them, but also want to wait for the LTD releases because those Ziricote wood cups look unreal!

I’m new to the game and to this forum but everyone’s been awesome, so far! Can’t wait to be a ZMF owner myself!

Was set on waiting on a limited wood myself, but couldn’t wait and ordered. Sapele wood is much more beautiful in real life than from the pictures online.

I have an Aeolus order that has been in sanding/finishing for a month. Thank goodness I’m on a long trip now so I can stop checking status every day. OK, several times a day.

So after listening for a bit to my Aeolus on the Asgard 3 w/ AK DAC, I think I have a good understanding of what I’d like to get out of my AMP upgrade. Edit: Forgot to mention budget, haha. I’d be happy with around $500-800.

I’d want:
+More soundstage
+Bass impact
+Seperation between instruments
+Blacker background

Don’t want:
More romantic sound (perfect as is)
Any extra bump in the highs (perfect as is_

Any thoughts on what AMPS I should be looking at, now that I’ve sussed this out? Almost sounds like I’m looking for a neutral sounding tube amplifier.

Not sure what your budget is, but you just did a very good job of describing a ZMF pendant.

Ah, budget. Important aspect… $500-800.

Burson Soloist 3XP is another one if you want something more inexpensive and similar sounding…or the Burson Funk which is supposed to be the Soloist but fully single-ended and is around your budget…

i know you said amp. i saw it in capital letters. i read the words. i am gonna be that guy on the internet and give a completely different recommendation. i also do not have an aeolus but will probably buy one later this year. i apologize to the internet gods for breaking every rule on giving advice on the interwebz.

that all said, the multibit card or modi multibit will get you 50-100% there. the jump between the AK dac and the multibit was significant for me and noticeably improves soundstage, separation, and impact.

Lyr 3 will bump the highs but it will be a little more romantic. Others will have to comment on the Jot 2 or SW51 (I have one on order) but they fit the budget.

Feliks Audio Echo for sure

Yep! Once I get the amp I’ll have to get a dedicated DAC, so I was going to pick the Bifrost 2 or the Modi Multibit.

Seriously Bob, you can get a used Echo for 500, and it will be the best bang for your buck with a ZMF headphone

And Bifrost 2 is an excellent choice for a Dac at that price point

Ok cool! I could also build a crack w/ speedball? Or would that be too tubey for what I’m after…

Don’t think ZMF can ever go “too tubey” but I’m not into building amps so I’m not the guy for that.

Based on my understanding of their sonics only, maybe have a look at Quicksilver ($1k) and Feliks Espressivo.

100% agree ZMF can’t ever go too tubey! They’re wonderful with tubey gooiness!

Has anyone received their Aeolus recently from ZMF?

I’ve ordered on 3/3 and the status has been sitting in assembly since 4/11. How long does QC & shipping usually take?

I want to believe that my order is just about to be shipped

Does positioning on your head matter with the Aeolus? Sometimes I feel like the vocals sound like they are coming from behind me, not sure if this makes sense. I guess when I move the headphone more forward, it balances it out, but seems like the headphone is sitting too far forward. It could also be my audio chain as it’s fairly mid-fi and staging isn’t great.

I haven’t ordered lately but I’ve seen Zach say on another forum that it’s been taking about 6 wks total from order to shipping. Could be longer though.
