ZMF Auteur over-ear Headphones - Official Thread

The Auteur shown on the opening screen of the ZMF website looks to be a new wood. Maybe? It doesn’t look to me like the stock Ambrosia Maple and no LTD is available. Is it Marblewood?

That appears to be spalted maple (i.e., literally invaded by fungus). This adds definition between sections. It’s a popular look.

I’ve been wanting a set of Auteur. Those are beautiful. Might just have to get a set of those if/when they are released. I wish that picture was still up. Now it’s sapele VC.

It’s still up. It’s a video so you just have to wait a few seconds while it cycles through the several models.

Thanks for the link! That’s a very interesting article.

So according to Zach it’s very, very spalted and beetled ambrosia maple.

Got my Wenge Auteur today, LOVE the sap wood front giving it a two tone look. They are absolutely cranking on the Pendant’s 100ohm tap.

I think the Auteurs are the prettiest ZMFs. Love the grills on them

I loved the Auteurs on audition and managed to get a pair used, but they haven’t been treated very well. It’s beautiful Cocobolo wood, but there’s a few scratches and the finish also seems to be bubbling a bit. I gave them a once over with Guardsman and they came up in a nice shine, but the scratches are still an issue.

Does anyone have any tips for how to refinish them without ruining the metal grills?

I think your best bet is to email the man himself…Zach will give you some insight. You could also ask if you can bring it in for a touch-up…price for that should be on the ZMF website.

Anyone have both the Aeolus and Auteur? I was wondering which one has more mid-range warmth, lusciousness, and forwardness…

Thanks!

I do and the Aeolus is by far the more lush and mid centric of the two. You give up some treble extension to the Auteur but gain a very warm, lush, and forward midrange.

I think I’m going to order the bocote. I can’t decide between black and aged copper. I think the black accentuates the grain, but the aged copper is so nice too……

I personally find the aged copper to really vibe with the aesthetic of the auteur in general especially with the bocote.

For me it’s hard to top the Wenge auteur given it reminds me of a gothic bench sitting is a spacious cathedral.

But as an easy second I love the Bocote look to the auteur in the stock photos. The grain has a lot of character. I was told that the bocote was maybe going to be used with the Eikon and Atticus next but they must of switched to the auteur and Aeolus instead. Definitely a better choice as both look amazing with the grills in contrast to the wood grain. I wonder now what they will do with the eikon/atticus Ltd?

On HF Zach says: And lastly - we are working on getting the Atticus and Eikon made in Bocote - but don’t want to make any promises yet until we have a better supply of thick enough wood! More shortly…!

I want to get an Eikon again, but I have been waiting for a nice LTD release.

I would like to see how the Eikon looks in Sapele. It has very nice chatoyance from what I’ve seen in other models. I think it would look great on the Eikon.

Copper. The black on black grill is basically invisible, and the grill is the best part on an Auteur (*except for the wood and the sound, obv! lol)
