Electronic Music Discussion (EDM, Trance, Synth, Dub, Techno, House, etc)

That’s one of my favorite albums. At the time I bought it, I didn’t know she was a member of the Knife, and I don’t think I’d even heard anything by the Knife, so this was a gateway for me.

Yeah, as I imagine you know the Knife is her and her brother before she went on her own. I love the Knife too!

A couple of other female goth/darkwave/synth artists who were releasing stuff around the same time as Fever Ray’s first album were Zola Jesus and Austra. I’m also a big fan of theirs. Do you recommend any other acts in a similar vein?

I love Fever Ray, and this album is her best IMO. “Keep the Streets Empty For Me” & “Coconut” are favorite test tracks of mine - they give you vocals, soundstage, transients, sub-bass, mid-bass, & dynamics right there back to back. The friend I went with to CanJam NY a few months ago actually made fun of me because every time I told him to listen to a headphone I had “Coconut” playing. lol

Did you try the Atrium Closed at CanJam NY? @robson’s original post inspired me to play Fever Ray, Zola Jesus and Chelsea Wolfe all day, using an Atrium Closed to up the sub bass.

The Atrium Closed enhances the synths and adds a layer of dread to the sound IMO.

And I’m afraid I always skip “Coconut” because I’m not a fan of the 4 minute instrumental intro, more of a problem with my attention span than the song. But I’ll try to listen to it more going forward, because I don’t want to be accused of not being a real fan. :grinning:

I did briefly listen to Atrium Closed at the Earmen table, but bc it hadn’t been formally announced yet I didn’t know what it was. I thought it was VC, but it didn’t sound right which made me think Earmen’s ch-amp was doing something REALLY major to the sound. lol

The instrumental intro IMHO is a GREAT “test track” for dynamics & “punch”. It slams harder on my Legend EVO than almost any other song I can find.

I’ll add it to my test tracks, which will make up for the number of times I’ve listened to the album and skipped that song LOL.

I love the Atrium Closed, especially for electronic music. But it sounds very different, depending on whether it’s made of hard or soft wood, and whether you’re using the lambskin or suede pads. I’ve never heard differences to that extent in other ZMFs. It all comes down to preferences (I’m a huge fan of hard wood & suede pads) so there’s always a risk that you’re at CanJam and you’re listening to the combination that is “wrong” for your preferences and you walk away not liking it.

I completely forgot about the AC the last few months since canjam but this thread reminded me of it and now I’m super curious to try one on my Riviera AIC-10… I’m guessing bass would be absolutely wild with this combo

Listened to the Fever Ray for first half of my drive today. Very nice- especially the songs that have whole gamut of sound.

But then I had Siri play Sympathy for the Devil which led to 2016 remaster of Stones’ Sticky Fingers which is most excellent in a different way.

The video for “When I Grow Up” is crazy sick, too.

I had never seen that video before, wow! What a trip! She is definitely a bit out there, quite interesting :+1:

The new album is really good, too. Not quite as good as the eponymous album, but better than the one in-between IMHO.

You have such a nice appreciation for the EDM and metal. Not what I usually go for, but fine in the proper dose or when in the right mood.
