HarmonicDyne x Zeos Eris Measurements & Official Discussion

Zeos & Linsoul have teamed up for another collab, this time with the HarmonicDyne brand, and it’s all about the bass. They were kind enough to send them to us for review.

Here are the measurements:

B&K 5128

Raw

HpTF Variation

What does HpTF variation mean? headphones behave differently on different heads. Here you can see the variation in performance when measured with two different heads/ears, one in the form of the B&K 5128 and the other in the form of the GRAS KB5000 pinna.

THD:

Ordinarily I’d show it at 110dB as well, but this level of Harmonic distortion at around 100dB is already a bit concerning and as I pushed it further I’d start getting some high order products creeping in.

EQ:
Despite the unusually high harmonic distortion, it can still be EQ’d, just not quite as much as we might like. Keep in mind that distortion is related to volume level, so how much boost you can get away with is determined by how loud you listen.

In this instance I didn’t push it as far as I’d ideally like, both to be safe but also because this is meant to be a headphone for bassheads. So this is still a basshead EQ… just made it more clean. I kept a bit of that V-shape intact, just focused the bass more towards the sub-bass rather than mid and upper bass, allowing the mids to come through a bit more cleanly.

Eris EQ

Notes

  • Build quality is nothing special but does the job and feels sturdy enough
  • Comfort is exceptional. Big cushiony pads, nice padding for the headband.
  • Subjectively, it’s reasonably detailed sounding, just massively wooly, muddy bass punctuated by spicy treble.
  • Tonality overall is just not remotely in the category of “good sound quality”.

It should be noted that Zeos had this sent to us, knowing that we would be measuring it, and having a general sense that this is how things would go for us. He’s explained that he made it deliberately to NOT be normal - to not be like the sound that others are chasing. So despite what I’m about to say, it’s admirable for him to take this approach with his product, so please check out his channel here and consider his perspective on all of this as well.

Now, as far as our evaluation is concerned, we like Zeos… we’re friends with him and regularly hang out at audio trade shows, so it pains me to say that this is one of the more unpleasant auditory experiences a person can have, despite the excellent comfort. I described it in the review as sounding “like you’re walking through a swamp while occasionally getting impaled by spikes”, and you can also show that fairly demonstrably with the measurements.

I think the rebuttal here has been something along the lines of “you just don’t like fun”, however I would counter by saying it’s worth trying that EQ profile out for the Eris if you think that’s the case.

To me… ‘fun’ and good sound quality are not mutually exclusive. You can have good midrange and treble balance, while also having massive, thunderous, unhinged levels of bass, that doesn’t mask or muddy the rest of the sound. I would love to see something like that in the next attempt, rather than just copious midbass at the expense of everything else.

To be fair, one of your greatest aspirations is to own a gently used Toyota Camry, so I don’t think you’re beating the allegations on this one.

False. It is to own a brand new Toyota Camry. The hybrid of course.

You’ve somehow found a way to make it even less fun. Absolute legend.

Thanks for posting a review on this, Resolve.

I don’t know Z. But was still interested in this because it’s a new closed-back. I’ll be curious to hear listen_r’s opinion as well, since he favors somewhat warmer-sounding headphones. (Though I suspect this’ll be a little too V-shaped for him as well.)

I have not listened to the Eris, but compared your HBK 5128 measurement to the DF+SP model I use (HBK’s 1/3-octave DF curve modified with a -1 to -1.5 dB/octave sound power slope). This model is somewhat similar to the Headphones.com preference curve, but more relaxed in the upper mids, low treble, and mid-bass than your current pref curve.

It’s not a good match to the DF+SP model. Using 500 Hz and 3 kHz as reference points, the bass resonance is higher in amplitude and frequency. The treble is also higher in amplitude. And the mids are notched and uneven compared to the model.

The tuning on this isn’t unprecedented though. I think it’s similar to the response of some other V-shaped headphones, and also the kind of effect you might get with a loudness control on an old stereo. And this may be where the fun is for Z.

Timbre will probably be noticeably compromised by the swerviness in the mids. But some folks who still have most of their midrange hearing intact, and who prefer to listen at lower volumes might find it usable or even enjoyable. (This is just speculation based on the graphs though.)

EQ could possibly also help some. But I’d be conservative in my approach to the higher Q features in the mids. And not expect those to be perfectly smoothed.

This is not a headphone designed for high volume listening imho. But it was fun to check out the graphs!

One Up on You, @Resolve. Bought a “Gently Used” Nissan Leaf last year. Pure electric all the way. Great little car for running around town here in the burbs. Not for long distances though.

I too would like to hear @listen_r 's opinion on the Eris.

DMS’s take would also be interesting, since he has a bit of experience with car audio.

I wonder, for example, if the tuning on this headphone is similar to what some hip-hoppers would bump in their rides in the 1980’s and 1990’s. And if Z also likes some extra boom and sizzle in his whip.

I’m glad I found this review for that EQ alone…these headphones as you said are insane bass and I love that but very muddy and spikey as mentioned …now I am much happier …sometimes a bit of EQ really opens a set up

Welcome aboard, MF_SALT!

I assume you’re referring to @Resolve’s EQ settings. Glad though if you found any of the info here useful.

Another thanks to @Resolve for the EQ. While I like it stock for a some of what I listen to, bringing it a little closer to sanity is appreciated.

I jumped on it and bought a set and awaited them eagerly. they came and were exceedingly comfortable and had a penticon connector with which I enthusiastically plugged into my xDuuo TA-22. mmmm, DEEP bass! oh CRAP, it is masked as well as the lower midrange. try as I might, I couldn’t enjoy them.

My Hifiman 4XXs sounded better by a long shot and my Audeze Maxwells a lot better than that. so I took them to CanJam SoCal 2024 and encountered Zeos who was understanding and filmed himself returning most of my money in cash to me. I am satisfied even though I lost about $55 including postage and CA sales tax.

I used the money to snag a pair of Fiio FT-1s, which I heard at CJ SC 2. I really like their sound signature, which includes deep bass without exaggeration. I’m still waiting for them.
