iFi Pro iCAN

Unfortunately I didn’t have enough time to listen for long enough to make up mind and take some notes, but I will post my feeling eventually

Don’t worry no rush. Take your time I’ve still got impressions to write up from years ago. Lol.

@prfallon69 that’s how it works unfortunately. On the other hand I do prefer a review from someone who actually spend decent amount of time with particular setup instead of writing “hurry up I have a ton of other audio equipment still to review today since I try to make out some money out of my hobby” articles.

Keep fingers crossed on reading yours eventually

No worries, don’t rush anything!

Hi Guys !

I’m planning on getting an amp soon. Currently, I have the Violectric DHA 590 (with integrated DAC) and the iCAN signature on my list. Obviously, the integrated DAC on the Violectric, which I heard is very good, is a huge upside (as are the aesthetics to my taste). The iCAN has versatility going for it. In that regard, I had two questions that might help me decide.

  • I really like the xBass on the micro IDSD signature I’m currently using. I’ve often heard the bass shelf you get with it is of better quality than what you get with EQ. Is this an objective difference that can be technically backed up, and is the difference in quality clearly discernible? Or should I consider xBass as just another way of getting a bass shelf I could get in the same way if I’m willing to EQ?

  • Do the tube and tube+ settings add some tubbiness to the SS amp or is it an independent amp circuit ? Does the quality of the amplification take a hit when switching to tube mode? I assume that the tube setting of the iCan doesn’t give you the kind of quality you would get from a regular tube amp, but is that true ?

I guess that, if xBass gives you a better bass shelf than EQ, and if tube mode gives you a true, quality tube experience, then the iCan becomes just too good.

I LOVE this amp! I bought this amp used and it is still the most expensive piece of Head-Fi gear I ever bought.

It is definitely the most powerful amp I have ever owned or likely ever will.
Bass boost is the most useful function I have ever had on an amp. To me, almost every headphone can use a touch of bass boost.

Another feature that I never thought offered much value was 3D. It turns out that I was just ignorant. This feature is Awesome with planar’s.

These two features on top of huge power has made this unit a magical partner for the HiFiman HE6se V2’s. I ran these headphones on several amps with underwhelming results. But when these two met, it was love at first sight.

I prefer tube mode, but not tube+. Going back into SS mode gives you a whole different sound with more bass and a deeper presentation. But the tube sound is smoother.

Another piece that I will never sell.
