Toward clarity and precision, but it’s still tube-like. The P20 delivers a greater quantity of less defined mid-bass, and delivers it with more attention-grabbing impact. However, the difference isn’t too noticeable with bass-light material.
On a relative scale, the factory tubes were initially very thick sounding. They cleaned up over time, but the 5670s started out cleaner still.
What kind of tube/socket savers are “good/great” for something like this? I can see that once I put in the 5670s, it will take great patience and care to remove them without damage, due to the shorter tube.
Total tube noob on this one. Any ill effects of using a socket/tube saver to be aware of?
The amp isn’t so sensitive to socket savers, so socket saver away. As I previously mentioned, once you use better power, then tube swapping is more noticeable. I’ve tried better tubes like 1940’s JW WE 396a just to test if there’s a noticeable difference, and yes there is, but not to the point I’d burn my JW’s that cost more than the amp with them
The GE triple Mica is a better version of the 1970-80’s GE 5670 halo getters, while sharing overall linearity in that it’s a neutral tube. If you want something warmer there are other choices, but may have to spend up to $50-75 on tubes. If you are fine with that, you can try to find lower rating WE396a tubes. They are absolutely the warmest & fullest sounding of this tube type while not sacrificing detail. A distant 2nd would be the CBS/Hytron 5670/2C51 that has the double post D getter
I waited a couple months. The delivery had been scheduled on a delayed basis (~6 wks) from the start, which I accepted. But when no delivery happened, I inquired and found the initial pkg had been lost in shipping.
Loxjie stepped in and accelerated/delivery of replacement unit happened quickly. Unfortunately, the P20 that arrived is red, not the black I ordered. Oh, well. There are worse things.
My red P20 is now burning in. Overall, I’m a happy customer.
Hello all. I have been humming and hawing about this for months, but I finally took the plunge. Theoretically it’s a cheapie move, but not really. Keep in mind that i am in Canada and all prices are in Canadian bucks. And yes to my American friends, we do pay a shit load more than you guys for toys. I ordered from Amazon.ca:
Loxjie P20 for $129, plus 15% tax
4.4 male to dual XLR cable from Youkamoo-Audio Power at $42.34. It ships from Hong Kong and I have no idea what the final price will be. When you are ordering from a foreign country, US or China, the taxes, “fees”, etc. are a wild card.
XLR to dual 3.5mm headphone cable from New Fantasia. It was $71.00, plus 15% tax.
Sub-total was $243.33 plus applicable taxes and fees. I am sure the total will be at least $300.00 when all is said and done, but you never know. Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t.
Anyway, I am pretty excited to try this out. I am currently loving my Burson Fun-Classic SS amp. It is awesome and I hope that the Loxjie will bring something different to the table. I will play with it for a few months and then look at tubes.
This thread is actually what brought me to this forum.
My P20 arrived and unfortunately can not test it balanced. For now, I’m not very impressed with the sound, but I think it’s cleared after four days of burning. Save your original tube, they will take a great sound to the middle of exploitation life! Very good sound is in techno and progressive, but I’m not happy with the opera voices … some added airy and overexposure acoustics. I hope that with AK4499 which next month comes, the situation will improve significantly. In such a simple architecture everything matters, such as gilt wires, power supply, simple and reference DAC … I use Senn HD650.
I find the choice of input makes a big difference on this amp. I am currently using the HD6xx (so the 650) on SE output and am quite impressed with the sound (using the balanced input) especially on vocals.
Unbalanced input and output. The other positive thing I find in this amplifier is that my headphones have become remarkably faster.
Such devices have a great future and, in particular, that music ennobles! However, in order to be massive and fruitful, standards must … quality at affordable prices. Do you think it would be crazy if I use this amplifier JJ 6386 lpg gold.
They come out with side to side rocking and gentle tugging. They have 9 pretty thin pins on the bottom which can be bent if you are not careful. But, tubes are meant to be inserted and removed a reasonable number of times without trouble.
You can inspect the pins if you remove them too. Perhaps one side is slightly bent.
This specific amp is a little more challenging to remove the tubes than others I’ve used because the tube mount is recessed below the lid. The non-stock tubes I have are shorter and getting those off will be fun when that day comes…
