Music and drink pairings

Former colleague upon first trying Ketel One vodka:

“Look at this, it’s so smooth that I can drink it like water.”

Twelve shots and one hour later – unconscious on the sofa (even as a heavy regular drinker).

The main issue is that it’s usually mixed with that sickly green margarita mix. The sugar covers the alcohol flavor too well. It was the standard teen-course-of-self-destruction before Four Loko.

Once you get to Cazadores or better, tequila is a different beast. Never buy anything other than 100% agave for sipping. For a wild (rough) experience try Corralejo. For impressing your friends and overspending, buy Patron.

I’m going to take a stand here. You should only drink Southern Comfort while wearing ear protection.

Cazadores tequila in any form. It’s a premium tequila, and the best selling one in Mexico. However, it doesn’t have the brand recognition or cachet of the most expensive ones in the US. I’m partial to the Reposado - the lightly aged one, with salt and lime. Truly the Gulp of Mexico.*

How long before? I think in the UK there is Buckfast. And in my youth there was MD 20/20, or if you were feeling psychedelic MD 20/25 (C20H25N3O added).

I have not so fond memories of throwing up Mad dog 20/20 red flavor and thinking I was dying! Bathroom looked like a red murder scene…with me in between heaves crying “I’m just throwing up blood!!” I was very drunk…it was just the Mad dog 20/20 lol with some jack Daniels, beer, vodka and some random mix drinks… because who needs a liver?!?

Most ‘top shelf’ liquor brands cost 2x more because of heavy advertising budgets. Not because of quality differences versus lower profile brands.

Agreed.

  • Blanco / silver tequila tastes like plant juice
  • Reposado / rested is indeed the classic flavor profile and the reason to bother with tequila
  • Anejo / aged can resemble a generic whisky (I’ll stick with bourbon, rye, or scotch)

I think the popularity of margaritas dates back to the 1970s or 1980s in the southwestern US. Somewhere along the way teens got into jello shots and Jagermeister.

Re Vodka, my first experience with it was at a local rugby team initiation. I wen’t for club record and drank 24 neat Vodkas. I was woken up on my front doorstep at 4am by the milkman. What can I say I was 18. Never again.

Jägermeister is not the worst - for one or two shots max.
we did “porno-vodka” maybe 18 years ago with the “Ahoi-Brause-powder” in different tastes

once I got invited to a burning meter B52s by a co-worker after a champions-league match in mailand
it´s caluha or something creamie with 90% bush-rum … not the best idea but in the moment… seemed like a very good idea at that time

Enjoying some Johnnie Walker Green Label with both silence and some football commentary, as I flip between games in which I have no dog in the race.

I think that Green is my favorite of the Walkers, which is a blend of Talisker, Linkwood, Cragganmore, and Caol Ila, not mixed with neutral grain spirits. Rather more sophisticated than the Black, and with an authority that their Gold label totally lacks. I think the Gold was produced just to make money off of know-nothing wannabes or for sale in India to people that will probably refill it with Old Smuggler once the original contents are gone.

Here’s a new whiskey maker I found. Their Mavericks Single Barrel American Whiskey is great stuff (Bought one bottle and tried it, and went back and bought three more of the same batch). The 118 Proof Riptide Rye Whiskey is mighty tasty too.

Yes I did taste Mavericks, and it’s pretty good. Have not tried their Rye. Rye is pretty variable across brands, and suddenly there are many purveyors. Sazarac 12 year is quite good, as is Russell Reserve, both established spirits. Same for Michters. Have had Pikesville, which is also known but not as premium. Wild Turkey’s Rye is fine. Much better than what Dad calls “Old Overcoat.”

Angels Envy Rye is one of my go to bottles! ( I think I like it so much because it marries two of my favorite boozes together lol)

Willets Rye is another great Rye I’m a fan of! I’m finishing off a bottle of it currently…(well at night before bed lol)

The Riptide Rye 118 proof is very sweet to me. I Mix it down one to one with water. I’m on my first bottle. There will be another. $30 is a fair price for it.

Russell Reserve 6 Rye is an old favorite. It was hard to come by for awhile.

This is an awesome drink! Been drinking straight up…just lovely!

Check out Plantation Pineapple Stiggins’ Fancy Rum on Distiller!

Now, I’m partaken and need to go to bed…but damn if this plus the Verite Closed, ADI-2DAC and BHC+SB don’t have me in thrall…just swaying in my Gaming chair anticipation in full swing for the next random track from my Qobuz stream on random…but sleep beckons… maybe I’ll hook up the N6II with my 4.4mm cable and my VCs…good night, you fine folks of the forum.headphones.com :face_with_monocle:
