I’m a big fan of Myrkur, especially the album “M”. Not sure what genre to use for her. Ethereal shoegaze folk metal?
Just released today. I was at the recording in 2022 - I can actually hear myself in the crowd at the end of “Rebirth” / beginning of “Equinox”. The album seems to be composed of recordings from various dates that week, not all of them are from the night I was there. I really wish they had just released that one night start to finish, it was MAGIC.
Going to a concert tonight. Jazz.
Great gig. My first visit to Mickey’s Black Box. Nice acoustics. Seats maybe 250. Quality seats. Very cubical and very black inside. Will certainly visit again.
Volume wasn’t insane. With this size venue Steve Smith’s drums were not amplified. I could really hear the difference as he worked the cymbals with sticks, covered sticks, brushes, and bare hands.
Today Vital Information will go to the studio to record New Perspectives, their next album. We got to hear some new cuts for the first time. Best- very jazzy – version of “Who’s Crying Now that I’ve heard.
Either way, NOTHING compares to the experience of being there in the moment when amazing jazz happens. Try as they might, they can’t quite capture the magic of being there, “in the pocket”, when it happens.
You’re sooo right. Steve was on, so were the other two. I’ve seen Steve play with Journey, in rock mode, doing awesome solos, but here he really seemed relaxed, in the groove and having a great time. I’m familiar with Vital Information from a few years ago, but had not heard the keyboard, bass, drum trio version. All great musicians.
Smith is such a globalist. He incorporates Konnakol techniques - I’d heard him give explanations of the south Indian drum language with teaching examples, but had not seen and heard Konnakol vocals in jazz compositions. Really nice.
Manuel Valera is a keyboard master. Most of the time on a Rhoads, but he also had a Moog which he put to good use. And Janek Gwizdala is a sublime bass player, using a 5 string to get higher, rather than lower tones.
They did some things in unual time signatures, one, an 8-5 signature, essentially 13 counts, but broken into an 8 and a 5 measure. Reminded me very much of some of Brubeck’s “Time Further Out” album. Perhaps not surprising, as I’ve heard Steve doing a Brubeck homage. Joe Morello was the drummer on that album.
Just great range. They played “Sumo” from his Time Flies album, and something very jazzy that somehow resolved into “Don’t Stop Believing”. The finale was a modern take on swing.
Great rec! Love the dream-like soundscape. Going to save this one for an end-to-end listening session.
The further I’ve gone down the rabbit hole, the more I find myself seeking out and appreciating well-recorded live music. I rarely am able to get to a show these days, so it’s nice to live vicariously through recordings that make you feel like you’re “there”.
One of my top-listened to live performances in 2024:
Ooooh, I love this! Melodic, interesting, and well recorded. Almost reminds me of Imogen Heap - one of my very favorite artists. Thanks for the rec.
If you want my very favorite live album, though non-vocal, it would 110% be Manu Delago’s “Circadian (Live)” (very specifically the LIVE version, which is substantially superior to the studio version IMO). Easily one of my top 10 favorite albums of all time. When I had 5 minutes with HE-1, “Draem” was one of the things I listened to. This tour happened right before covid, and sadly it never made it to the US. I WISH I had gotten to experience this in person.
Been chasing this 12" for a long long time. The few copies available on discogs are either poor quality and/or stupid-expensive. Finally snagged one of the new MOV ltd editions at msrp. #1300 of 1500. Sound is excellent and the sleeve is one of the nicest in my entire collection - it has a pressed linen texture and feels REALLY premium. Good job MOV!
Do you have a particular recording that truly speaks to your soul even though the audio quality is garbage? This is mine.
Have you heard “The Centennial Collection” from 2011? It is the best sounding Robert Johnson collection that I’ve listened to. 1930’s recordings are never going to sound pristine, but they used the best sources they could find and did minimal digital processing (like noise reduction) for this release.
Yes I have. The cleanup of the recording is good.
When Johnson plays blues, his rhythms are incredibly difficult.
I saw Alice Cooper live (dead?) in the 80s. One of the best concerts I’ve seen. He knew how to put on a show.
Did you go w/ leathers and mascara?
