“Now Playing”

This week’s topical theme for work Spotify Friday playlist was international pop music (inspired by the K-Pop / tik tok people in the recent news.) Soon as I heard the first 20 seconds of this I pulled down one of my ten contributions and threw this on the list. (I’ll pretend it’s pop. For a few of us making a good list is a priority each week.) Going to have spend some time with this album.

There’s something so primordial about this song. With its ethereal strings, and echoey vocals decaying into that same ether. Kind of like a contemporary fugue, I think. Or is it a requiem? I don’t know, I just really like it.

I’ve posted a track previously, but this album is so good.

Really liking the music you’ve been sharing!

The last few tracks really have a haunting quality.

It sure didn’t look like Portuguese. I think (after online “research”) it’s Bombara, one of the languages of Mali where Traoré came from. Wikipedia says " Bambara is a variety of a group of closely related languages called Manding, whose native speakers trace their cultural history to the medieval Mali Empire.[5] Varieties of Manding are generally considered (among native speakers) to be mutually intelligible – dependent on exposure or familiarity with dialects between speakers – and spoken by 30 to 40 million people in the countries Burkina Faso, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast and the Gambia.[6] Manding is part of the larger Mandé family of languages."

Note that Kayes, where he comes from has a pentatonic native musical scale.

Thank you for checking. I had a felling after I posted that I was incorrect.

It’s such an awesome album.

listening to a old favorite from about 10 years ago, Merpeoples self titled album

Still surprisingly good, still interested in these all female Japanese indie rock bands after all these years

His story in his wikipedia article is pretty fascinating. Was a star but destitute, suffered personal tragedy, disappeared, was rediscovered, and recorded his first album decades into his career.

Really intrigued by this album. Don’t really know how to best categorize it, but it contains elements from different styles of electronic music. Very relaxing and enjoyable listen throughout, makes me want to just stop what I’m doing, sit back and close my eyes for a while. Not a style for everyone, but perhaps some of yall feel the same way about it as I do. Just thought I’d share it.

It’s definitely got a mixed vibe about it. I agree re its hybrid nature. Not sure it’s my bag but an interesting listen anyway.

Yeah that tends to be what I happen to enjoy a lot. Exploring new things and stumbling across music that kind of pushes the boundries of my comfort zone just enough to where things get interesting but also preserve a sense of familiarity, if that makes any sense haha. And this album is a good example of where that fine line is for me.

Re: Circles - Qobuz labels it “Classical”.
(I think they gave up on what title to give it and just pulled a category out of a hat.)

In Roon it’s labeled as just Electronic. Guess that’s about as specific as it gets.
