Kind of too bad the PS5 doesn’t make use of ANY of Sony’s properties or tech when it comes to audio. Or anything decent or basic in general. LDAC? Nope. Bluetooth in general? Also no. Standard audio inputs? Yeah… NO. Modern USB implementation? Sony says “Fuck your DACs!”.
I know all the audiophile bells and whistles are kind of pointless on the device given that such a tiny niche would make use of them, but they make it all but impossible to get decent audio out of a PS5. I mean they can’t even give us USB that works with modern DACs? Or the ability to use LDAC which I’m pretty sure is a Sony property.
I purchased a PS5 a few months back and spent a few days trying all sorts of ghetto jury rigging to make some sort of quality headphone or IEM work with it but no dice. The controller audio jack is pretty terrible, not only could it not handle any of my cans(not even the Clear which run off anything), but it even had trouble with my IEMs, not from a power standpoint, but sound quality and the way it handles volume in general was just poor. It was either buy one of a very, very few select sources that could connect to the PS5 or give up on high end audio. I gave up and bought the lightest, cheapest Logitech wireless headset I could find. It’s horrendous… but it’s darn comfy.
Just annoying when you have this incredible audio gear right there in front of you but can’t use it. I game on PC 99% of the time, so it’s not a huge deal, but playing a few games I was very much looking forward to on a PS5 with subpar audio was a major letdown. Just this constant reminder in the back of my mind that my experience could very easily be better. Did I have fun with the games? Absolutely. But audiophiles nitpick…
