Rosson Audio - RAD-0 - Official Thread

Nah, man. That was funny. Especially because you saved it for the very last line. :+1:t4:

Great review.

Another truly excellent review @Chrono. I love the look of these and the colour is great too. These would seem great headphones to chill out with.

Nice review.

There is also an easy mod for these that from what I recall that can bring down the treble a bit, add dynamics and increase bass response. Some folks have found the treble a bit much but that is always listener dependent. I think the mod was describe on SBAF and was easy, something like removing a layer of dampening material.

That sounds like the opposite. Usually removing dampening material will increase the treble due to more reflections.

Rosson Mod

Post 4. There is even a comment about it seeming counterintuitive regarding what the mod does, which goes along with your post. The material removed isnt actually within the cup itself.

My memory still works!! You had me wondering for a bit.

Thank you so much for checking it out! The headphone is definitely a looker, and its aesthetic has continuously grown on me. Also, yes, they are indeed a joy to listen and relax–Abbey Road hasn’t sounded this good for me in a while.

Do you experience any ā€œcrinkleā€ from the planar magnetic membrane? My pair of RAD-0’s have this sound coming from the left cup when putting them on or resetting them on my head. It does not occur while listening, but was curious if this is something I should be concerned about. I have about 100 hours on these so there not broken in yet but the crinkle has been the from the start. Outside of this I really love these cans, they sound outstanding and as far as I’m concerned these are the most aesthetically beautiful headphones out there.

Yeah that is very normal on planar-magnetic diaphragms, and it’s not something that should be a cause for concern!

I will advise, however, that you do sue caution when putting them on or taking them off, as you want to do it smoothly and gently to avoid any damage.

Not Rosson Audio but Audeze, from here, see in particular the last paragraph:

Since air is trapped between your head and the diaphragm it creates a pressure zone, and as the headphones shift with movement you may hear a slight crinkling sound from the diaphragm. This is a normal occurrence with planar magnetic drivers and is nothing to be concerned about, it’s the sound of the thin diaphragm moving back and forth with the changes in air pressure.

Sometimes as the driver film stretches slightly with age, the sound can become more apparent, and sometimes it may also lessen again. This is mostly influenced by factors in your environment (such as temperature and humidity), and we don’t have control over whether or not this occurs.

We recommend exercising certain cautions when handling planar magnetic headphones: trapped air can create high pressure and sudden pressure changes could damage the diaphragms, and this is not covered by warranty. When you put the headphones on or take them off, it’s not a good idea to press them hard and fast against the head, so we recommend slow and steady movement to allow the air pressure to stabilize.

Thanks, glad to know its not a concern!

Dang. Do review units ever go on sale? That white on white grill is ice cold!

Great review @Chrono. Torn between Rad-0s and Verites for my next cans. Leaning Rad at the moment

The correct answer is ZMF Verite  slinksawayslowlywhilestaringatyou

Joking aside the Rad-0 was fantastic while I had it here… and would be my TOTL Planar of choice if I was to go down that path (I’m more a dynamics guy)

Haha! Here’s how I’m looking at it: I’ve come to realize I value clean thumping bass, extended sub-bass and rich (forward?) mids. The higher frequencies I’m impartial to as I don’t think I hear them that well. Or my ears aren’t tuned well enough yet to appreciate what is good, decry what is bad, although I know when something is piercingly sibilant. So I think my sonic preference puts me in planar trajectory – the headphones, not the physics equation lol.

Also, I’d like a phone that’s super easy to drive. I don’t have desktop grade gear (yet), so I intend to source it with my mobile/transportable gear until that time: Dragonfly, HipDAC, Cayin N8. Re desktop gear, after seeing first impressions and today’s live chat with you, I might end up with the ā€œMagnanimous Stackā€ (trademarked by @ValentineLuke) aka Modius/Magnius.

What do you think?

Good Desktop setup! Just remember it works best in Balanced mode =) I think you will be plenty happy with it! Funny thing… you basically described a ZMF house sound with your preference  @ProfFalkin what do you think?

Though I think the RAD-0 may be a bit ā€œeasierā€ to drive on paper… most planars are power hungry in general and ā€œseemā€ to do best with very powerful amps, though I used my Cayin N6ii to drive the RAD-0 and my ZMFs happily enough (still sound better off proper amp). Your N8 actually has a lot of power and is a rather nice pairing with the ZMF and RAD-0… @Torq you have all of these what is your take on this pairing? sorry for the @ =)

I think he would immediately fall in love with the ZMF Aeolus or Eikon, proclaim his eternal devotion to House Zach, and spend the rest of his days listening blissfully to that glorious sound. Praise be.

:joy:

Concur! Praise be to our patron dynamic saint ZMF!

Thank you both for your insight! I actually haven’t researched the Aeolus much, only the Verites since it’s often praised. Now off to see what more I can find out re Aeolus. Rad-0, I’ll revisit you soon.

Praise be!
