Schiit Audio - Official Thread

After a bit more time with the Unison Yggdrasil I can say without a doubt that the instrument separation, noise floor, dynamics have all been improved a considerable amount. Additionally bass quantity and impact has increased. To the point where I have to run an eq with my Empyreans (Empy was already bass heavy) now to suck out a little of the low end… otherwise they are bass cannons now.

Have you found they have any efect on the soundstage width at all? What DAC did the BF2 replace?

It did extend sound stage width and imaging a noticeable amount, not night and day but enough to be able to easily discern. (increase was equal with both headphone and my 2.1 system in the living room)

My BF2 just shipped today. Already own a Lyr 3. Can’t wait to hear Utopia in the chain. I was close to ordering a Qtest but regained my senses when I thought of the music I could buy with the difference.

Desktop equipment now consists of Topping D70, Airist R2R, THX 789, Lyr3 with MB card. Ocassionally the Big Daddy PS Audio DSJ will mate up with the Lyr3 for some special sessions with the Focal cans (Utopia and Clear).

Still debating whether to add a Lyr 3 to my Jotunheim/Bifrost 2 stack. Limited a bit by space, but would like to tiptoe into the world of tubes and I’m figuring there’s some good synergy there for my first exposure. How much of a different experience/sound will the Lyr give me over the Jot?

At the moment, I’m playing with the Loki in the chain – I have the BF2 connected to the Jot with both the balanced and SE outputs, with the Loki in the SE chain. As the name would imply, the Loki is a lot of fun.

I owned the Lyr 3 and Jot and ran them side by side for a good while. The second I got the Lyr 3, I stopped listening with my Jot. The Lyr does everything the Jot can, and more. The tube adds more dimension to the sound and better more realistic tonality. Dont get me wrong, I love the Jot and still own it, but the Lyr 3 is definitely a step up, in all regards. The tube I used in my Lyr 3, was the Brimar CV1988 Black Glass. I rolled almost every NOS 6SN7 known, and that tube was tops.

You prefer the Brimar CV1988 Black Glass to 1940s Tung Sol 6SN7GT round plate?

I sure do! The Brimar is my all time favorite 6SN7, by far.

The LYR3 + Bifrost 2 are such a great pair, listening now with my 6XX and I don’t want to go to work lol! I know the tube hasn’t even burned in yet and I am already happy, not sure how I go back to my smsl desktop stuff after this…

Yeah, don’t go back. Welcome to the dark side.

I started large with Yggdrasil and Ragnarok and MJ2 which had always been a standard size box of electronics to my way of thinking. As I added Valhalla 2, Lyr3, Jotunheim and Jotunheim R for fun, variety and the SR1a they were easy to move around and position by a mile but still felt fairly solid even given their diminutive size… But holey moley “Loki”, need to put my reading glasses on to find that one in the rack.

I have had my Jot for about 2 weeks now paired with the B2 and its sublime…a really nice pariing, I go back and forth with the HD600’s and Clears…both work very well…

Thinking of buying a set of HD800s to experience them next, but have to sell some more stuff!!

Yeah I think it would be a great setup for my desktop since I have the LYR for my chair relaxing station. I wonder how much interest someone would have in My SMSL SP200 THX and SMU-8 v2 balanced setup the value for what you get is very good just prefer the Schiit sound now, I got it all in November of last year, great for someone who is starting out. Maybe I will try listing it on here and see what happens!

Sell it to me cheap enough, and I’ll pick them up.

I need something interesting to aim at on the rifle range. If there is no one else there, I can take a slowmo video. Hahaha.

Lol! I actually may just keep them to A/b against other products

Have you tried a NOS RCA 5692 Red Base? I’m very pleased with that. It’s supposed to be an audio upgrade to the 6SN7, certainly is better shielded. To my ears, it continues to outperform the Tung-Sol 6SN7 GTB that Schiit packed as a “tube upgrade”.

The Lyr3 and 6XX are a great pairing. Don’t be afraid to substitute a Hifiman HE-560 in just to change up, or a Grado RS1e to hear better soundstage. Truthfully, I can’t pick which is better between the 6XX and the Grado RS1e with the Lyr3. I listen to both a lot.

I am going to try the Ananda’s next as I have those. I always like to start with the 6XX as a reference when I get something new.

I have and it did not really do much for me. The 5692 red base seemed dull and had congested sound stage. That tube seems quite a bit overrated to me, compared to a Brimar CV1988 or Sylvania Bad Boy.
