The General Advice/Questions Thread

I don’t really have a budget in mind but I already have to pick up a Modi, a Heresy, a couple of Shure mics and some Shure in-ears so I don’t want to get “punished” by customs too much if the stop me.

So yes, I would say around 150.

Oh you already got Shure InEars recently- some IEMs …would have been my next idea

The Shure IEMs aren’t actually for me, they are for a project. However, I do already have around 20 sets of budget IEMs

Mine has been fine for a few months anyway. Feels well enough built, though I don’t think the pads will last very long.

I was just going to mention the HD58X myself. As a starter can it ticks many boxes. It can run from phones easily too as has already been mentioned. It’s not as good IMHO as the HD650 but not too far off. I have both myself and still listen to both although the 650’s get most headline.

Another option I thought of is a set of Grado SR-60e which would allow me to buy them from headphones.com

Again, I am not looking for anything particular, just something in a different flavour, and I have never tried Grado’s.

That would be very different.

Grado’ s are very, very bright. I had a pair of 60’s (or maybe 80’s ) and I had to return them due to the highs.

Everything else about them was pretty awesome. I still want to try different Grado’s because I know I’ll find a pair that I’d really like.

if we bring Grado´s on the list - why not a AKG K702 or the Drop version? @SenyorC

That’s a good one. AKG’s are soundstage monsters. :+1:t4:

and quite comfortable - at least for me

the one point I was for the 4xx yesterday, cause they do have some soundstage(from what I read) over all others @SenyorC mentioned yesterday

and if bright is no problem - why not bring Beyerdynamic DT 880s 600 Ohm to the table?

They have those as a tier 3 loaner headphone. Best you try those first, imo. Grado isn’t for everyone.

I owned and sold the Grado SR80e. They sound like HD-600s with no bass and more hiss. Per the original question, look at the $200 range. Sennheiser is a better option for the best in the range.

We are AKG (well, all Samsung>Harmann>etc products) dealers so I can get the AKGs here probably a lot cheaper than I would in the US anyway, and save the hassle of transporting them back.

I haven’t really taken much notice of the AKG drop version, is it different to other versions or is it just a replica of a standard model?

no replica:

“Our first custom headphones ever, the Massdrop x AKG K7XX have been an enduring community favorite since they first launched more than two years ago. Since then, they’ve received praise from Head-Fi, Super Best Audio Friends, Z Reviews, and more for offering a rare value in the world of open-back cans. Inspired by the legendary AKG K702 65th-anniversary edition, this rendition features the same dynamic driver technology and superior build quality—plus a few updates in the sound and comfort departments”

Completely off topic but this just reminded me that I have 3x pairs of Beyer DT 1770 Pro’s sitting in a cupboard in my office. They have been there for about 6 months and I was supposed to be trying them out and forgot

Thanks @ProfFalkin but as I am in Spain, just the logistics would probably cost more than the retail price.

don´t bother … the 1770 Pro is not on the same level with DT 1990 Pro(which also has it´s problems)

that is why the Drop 177x Go was released and it did not much better, from what I read

I invested time in the 1770 Pro with a few auditions and it was disappointing

That sounds interesting, I’ll check them out.

Again, completely off-topic but for some reason I have always thought the K701 is an amazing looking headphone, it’s actually my wallpaper on my home PC. I think I would buy one of those just for the looks.

Yeah, I’ve not read good things about them but I promised I would give them a try before I sent them out (they are for a radio station). I guess I had better do so soon

The DT1990 Pro are actually my main headphones and I like them, although I do EQ the highs down slightly sometimes. I was looking to source some of the foam to test the mod on them (I posted in a different thread).
