Discovering Roon and learning how to properly utilize parametric EQ had me feeling like I was rediscovering my headphones all over again. And in terms of actual discovery, Roon Radio has been a blessing in finding new music.
Also learning about the secondhand market for headphones helped me obtain headphones I previously only dreamed of owning. After sampling several over this year I finally pair my collection back down to two pairs and feel content for a long time to come.
I have participated in making a website about coffee and it turned out to be quite good. But there were many mistakes in programming made and fortunately I have good friends in IT to help me.
With that I mean, that when I started out in this hobby it was the same for me, I couldn’t for my life tell a Tube amp from a SS amp; but now my main home office gear consists of 1 tube amp and 1 SS THX amp (both with internal dacs) and a stand-alone dac and I can hear a significant difference, because I know what to listen for.
I can tell a difference between my EL34 tubes and my KT88 tubes and whether or not I use my internal or stand-alone dac.
OTG I have a M11 DAP and a Xduoo dac/amp to pair with my mobile. They sound very different.
Does it matter?
I like the difference and I like that it is possible to create the most optimal output for the usage. If it is only for music I mainly use the tube amp, but online use or gaming the SS comes out. I like the broader soundstage my Ares II dac gives me and I like the rich detail level my SS amp gives.
If you are happy with your current set-up, that could be a bliss as you don’t look for any upgrades and saves the money. The 2 amps and the dac has a MSRP of DKK 22.000, but I will get some upgrades over time, because it is my hobby to both listen, but also try different equipment.
But watch out if you start to find amps and dacs interesting and you start to hear a difference, your wallet will not thank you
I hear you. “Value” is as subjective as anything in this hobby. A marginal improvement might mean everything for one person, while it may be completely insignificant for others.
Putting your money towards better headphones will generally net you the largest improvement for the money you spend, but at some point you’ll find that you’re happy with the headphones you’ve got, and upgrading the DAC/Amp to something with a particular synergy with the headphones you’ve got becomes more worthwhile than upgrading your headphones.
But of course, this is purely optional. It’s good to keep an open mind, but of course it’s essential to remain honest towards yourself. If you’ve spent a good chunk of money on something and it’s just not quite doing it for you, there’s no reason to try to convince yourself otherwise. Take your lessons from it, try to get your money back if you can, and move forward with what you’ve learned. Only you can decide what’s right for you and what isn’t.
Yes, yes yes. I am now using Roon at home and in the office with a Nucleus at each location. Getting set up with the proper parametric equalization settings makes all the difference. I was a little skeptical that it could make that much difference, but what it does is balances out the delivery, making the music presentation even more enjoyable.
Here are the recommended Parametric EQ settings for just about every headphone and IEM:
I could not agree more about Roon Radio. The selections are sometimes uncanny, matching my mood and frame of mind with the perfect selection. The best ones get added to my library.
