Yes they made very evocative music together and Paul Simon solo work is excellent. I also gotta agree, the Graceland album is a tour de force. An iconic album and I be of my favourite of all time.
Graceland is one of my most listened to albums. And the bass player (Bakithi Kumalu) is outstanding!
I hated ELO, the Bee Gees, Abba, etc. growing up as it was the music my sister and her very uncool friends listened to. While helping my parents clean out their basement I found many of her old albums and I must say, I experienced a very guilty pleasure listening to them. The song writing, especially of some of the early Bee Gees music is fab and Jeff Lynn is right up there with many of the other great British pop artists of the late sixties and seventies. Listen to this stripped down version of ELO’s Telephone Line. I now love the orchestral cheese in the original but the acoustic version showcases what a well written pop song this is :
I’ve been going on a bit of Triple J tear lately, particularly their “Like a Version” stuff as it’s generally pretty neat to see the spins the artists are putting on songs.
BBC’s Live Lounge has also been prominent for me lately.
And other various live performances
The crowd harmony in this Corey Taylor video is pretty insane
And also this song even though I greatly dislike the genre, it is admittedly a very fun song
Poor Corey. Just busted a nut. Not speaking figuratively, either. Apparently he was practicing for the Slipknot tour and…something…happened with one of his little boys.
@taronlissimore Taron…have you been in my DMs? lol j/k, I also have been listening to all of the above songs… that last one I turned my brother onto that band (The Dead South) a couple of months ago with this track…and he is now a huge fan.
I’ve been a big fan of the Like a Version stuff for a couple months now also…super fun seeing how bands tweak tracks to their signature…or do a different take of them… I posted one of my favorites somewhere on this site… let me find it…
@taronlissimore A.V. undercover is how I got into like a version music. My favorite so far: https://youtu.be/WC_DET26IAA
I’m a big fan of Atlas Genius as well as the A.V club so that’s right up my alley!
I think I stumbled on the “Like a Version” stuff on a youtube binge one night and the first one I listed to was:
Pretty big fan of most of the Of Monsters and Men live stuff as well though.
The Bee Gee’s are one of my guilty pleasures too. My mother took me to see them in the early 80’s. I can’t remember where it was but it would have been in the UK.
Ouch.
Two of my favorite bands! Chvrches latest isn’t catching my fancy…but it is recorded very well…
As I have said before, most of my work time is spent listening to Acoustic / Female vocal music.
Today I have been listening to this album of Covers that sounds very nice through the HD6XX
But as it is Friday and I am hoping to go home in the next hour or so, I have moved on to something a little more active…
Rage such a great get amped and workout or go do something band!
I thought of all of you guys last night. I went to Disney hall where Dudamel was conducting Mahler’s 8th symphony. I have to say that the first movement, Veni Creator Spiritus is the heavy metal of classical music. Loud as can be. Enormous orchestra and a huge number of singers (choirs and soloists) hollering together. I could not take my iPhone out to measure SPL, but I did do this in the less loud second movement and got to 100 db in some sections. We were no too far from the orchestra, but it was just AWESOME!
Even if you don’t totally get the music, it has to be one of the once in a lifetime experiences.
Mahler 8= Metal classic.
Hehehehe!
I got Rage Against the Machine when it came out in 1992 on CD. Nice album.
Totally. This and ROTS are etched in my childhood memories. So good.
I’m not sure why-- but this week has basically been all Synthwave, all the time. I’ve been through the latest Midnight album at least a dozen times-- it’s like a liminal sound bath of pure nostalgia. Definitely a guilty pleasure (this isn’t Philip Glass), but listen counts don’t lie.
I didn’t get it until '98 but it was amongst the first CDs I bought when I started working!
One more arpeggio and I’ll puke.
I said I wasn’t proud.
Oh man, @andrew can attest to my love of Synthwave. Some of my favourites that have made my summer playlist:
I actually made an evening driving playlist that he absolutely hates when I start it up in the office.
