What music have you been listening to this past week?

The cleanliness and detail of the 2019 remix has the ability to floor me at times.

The ‘in the room’ clarity truly astonishes me.

So for me, it’s that one.

Agreed, I think the way they’ve played with the soundstage and the extent to which they restored the tapes is impressive in the 2019 remaster. A lot of the distortion and clipping on the original is gone. At the same time I find the tonality on the 2019 remix to be somewhat off. It varies per song, but the bass is slightly too elevated, and so is the treble. The medley between “Yo Never Give Me Your Money” and “The End” is fantastic on thew 2019, but they botched “I Want You (She’s So Heavy),” in my opinion–vocals and guitars sound so unnatural to me.

I wonder how much of what we hear in remasters is skewed by our auditory memory?

I know when I first started listening via ‘better’ gear I had that “things I’ve never heard before” experience, and at times it was quite off putting.

Most of my favorite songs are attributed to moments/memories and the new listening experience affected that. I think a lot of the uneasiness with the newly revealed detail was my brain reconciling the two experiences. With remasters I think it’s possible to have some of the same types of experiences, but not always of course.

Sometimes engineers can be overly enthusiastic, but I guess the ability to apply their tools in a judicious manner is what sets apart greatness from mediocrity.

As long as I’m engaged in what’s playing, I’m happy.

That is a very good point. At least for The Beatles, there are a gazillion different versions of each song. I’m sitting here comparing the 2009/2015/2019 versions of “Come Together.” I prefer the vocals of the 2019 version for that specific track, and the instrumentation of the 2015 Remix (From the “1” LP). I think the 2009 one has a similar tonality to both of those combined, but at the expense of the amazing restoration work and soundstage done on the more recent releases. I think that they all have different things about them that I really like, I just wish the best parts about them could…come together…See what I did there?

You’ll never run out of versions to listen to or compare with the Beatles!

Heck, Chris Carter’s had a 2-hour weekly radio show playing “Breakfast with the Beatles” for over a decade.

Edited: Corrected the title of the radio show.

Hahaha that’s true. I don’t listen to the radio that often, but we have a Beatles 24/7 radio

I’ve been an (unlikely) Eminem fan for years. “Godzilla” is a total mindfuck & a timely reminder that this rapper hasn’t lost his fastball.

This Scary Pockets cover really got under my skin (actually dreamed about it last night). It’s the usual SP package: terrific tune & talented vocalist I never heard of; and an effortless, funky/floating revamp of the tune (I like the cover more than the original). Check the bass groove from Hagar Ben Ari & atmospheric guitar of Oz Noy. The fact they’re here shows the growing influence of this group.

Thanks for keeping this playlist up to date. I’ve found some good jams there. Go ahead and use Soundiiz to easily transfer music, playlists and entire libraries between platforms. It’s $4.5 a month and you can cancel anytime. That’s what I use to keep both my Tidal and Qobuz up to date.

My incredible wife just introduced me to this album as I am formally reviewing the ZMF Aeolus, and I am in heaven! I had heard her music before on the Matrix Soundtrack as well as with Hans Z but never her entire album :star_struck::exploding_head:

I like the vaporwave album art. It kind of reminds me of @MRHifiReviews intro on his YouTube channel.

I’ll have to check it out. :+1:t4:

I will definitely check this out too! Thanks!

Edit: listening now, really dig the beats and the synths.

Been listening to Henry Gross’ first self titled LP.
hard to believe he went from Sha Na Na to this.
This is the only digital copy of this I can find.
