Nice! Here is a little grain shot, I took of my pair.
Brush up on your photography skills, photo looks a bit …grainy…
Booo. Bad joke. Hehehe
Sapele is soooo hard to photograph. You need video to catch any of the chatoyance. Much better looking in person.
I knew you’d grill me for that.
Totally agree. Those that have seen them in person, can appreciate the pic a bit more, as you can clearly see there is some serious potential for killer chatoyance. I can confirm the chatoyance is killer, by the way.
Silkwood does this. Can’t photograph it either.
Aeolus family.
Whats a SS amp that compliments it well. Say $200-800.
Asgard 3? Jotunheim?
Something chifi?
Audio GD?
First thought is Modius + Asgard 3. Looks like a lot of value there.
You know, the longer I own the Asgard 3, the more I appreciate it. It is kind of mellow without losing detail. Has slam but doesn’t over do it. It’s like the amp forms a Vulcan mind meld with the headphone where two minds become one. Ok, not really, but that is an interesting metaphor.
Basically what I’m trying to say is, it may not be the most technically accurate or super detailed amp, but the music it makes is very engaging.
It works well for me with the HD650, E-mu Teak, ZMF Auteur, etc.
I haven’t heard the Modius, but A3 works well with the Bifrost 2 and Yggy.
You could do worse for more.
plugs ultrasound headphones into a pack of toilet paper…yeah, guess so.
Reckon Jotunheim is worth the extra?
I liked the Jotunheim. I think it’s a bit more exciting sounding. It also works real well as an inexpensive pre for studio monitors that need XLR connectors.
You might want to use the balanced output of Modius as everything I’ve read says that is the better sounding output.
Awesome. Looking into it.
Any other stand out pairings? @TylersEclectic thoughts? I know you probably run them on Phonitor or Cayin, but may have tested them on lower end SS gear.
I ordered a set of these for my ZMF Aeolus. Nice tweak which has improved wearing comfort. I ordered a second pair for my DCA Ether2. The latter was a huge improvement for wearing comfort. I went with lambskin on both pairs. The pad separates and surrounds the headband and attaches each side via velcro. Has to be a fairly thin headband (1/2" or less). e.g., FOCAL headbands are too thick to get a good velcro grip.
Hmmm… I like them on my Cayin DAP… they sounded good with the THX amps but, YMMV… I really liked them on the ECP amps but those are expensive and hard to find…JDS labs El Amp is another one I liked…
Alright. A somewhat unique set of Aeolus en route to Australia.
I’m leaning toward a Modius DAC and a Auralic Tuarus MK2 for the amp. Big clean non-THX power.
I am looking forward to you sharing your pair of Aeolus when you get them!
Alright. Aeolus is 2 days away, so for now;
Perfect headphone to compliment Aeolus.
Closed or Open.
I’m thinking something like the Sen HD800S, big soundstage, big detail, nuetral. But someone may have a better option?
Good morning gentlemen. I finally got hold of a used Aeolus Sapele, in like new condition, which came to me with the Universe pads, as well as with the base pads. I have not tried to change the pads to try the bases too, because as it sounds it seems very balanced. The cable is the standard cable, which seems to me sufficient, without infamy and without praise. I wanted to ask you which pads you prefer for the Aeolus and which cable, at a reasonable price, could be used to improve the sound of the Aeolus, to give a little more detail, just a little, in the high range. Thanks a lot in advance to those who want to answer me.
I use the suede pads and that is just a comfort issue, I just like how they feel over normal leather. I don’t think they ad detail
I got this cable from Aliexpress and it is just the right one, if you like a cobber cable. It is so well made and simple, just cobber and aluminium elements. I wouldn’t say if it gives a difference in sound, as I have never used the original cable. I wrote to them and a 6.35mm was no problem, they are very service minded.
Yeah. The Auteur sounds perfect for that. I’d personally go for a good OTL amp to compliment your Aeolus if you haven’t got one. A Feliks Audio Elise might make for a pretty awesome experience if you grab some universe suede pads. That’s what I’d do with a budget around the price of an 800s, but the sky’s the limit. The Echo at a way lower price has already made me hear the Atticus in ways I never thought I could. I saw in an earlier comment you were leaning toward a Modius. It might be better to split the budget between an Echo and Bifrost 2 if you are not already using something in a similar price range for dacs. At the risk of sounding like a broken record at this point, the very first minute listening to that combo I could see why Zach says Feliks amps pair well with his headphones. He even checks his tuning on the Euforia sometimes I believe. I haven’t heard other OTL amps so I’m super biased right now.
Splurged on the Aeolus LTD in Cocobolo this month. Can’t wait to see how it compares to the Atticus since both have the same TPE driver. I want to confirm for myself it is a direct upgrade from the 6XX. Zach was awesome as always shooting emails back and forth with me before making the purchase. Looking forward to how it lights up music, and hoping it will finally allow me to send the Elex to a better home. Love the upper mids on that Focal.
