Also, I’ll give that whiskey you made a try and post in the drink pairing section, the nose on it is very “wine” note to it…gave it a quick taste…it is potent straight up…I get the recommendation for the ice to mellow it out. Definitely a heart cut going on.

Which ZMF leather pads for Aeolus?
You have the Universe perforated pads, and universe suede perforated pads… I prefer the Suede perfs.

I had my friend’s Aeolus on loan for 1-2 months. Fantastic sound, especially w/Verite pads (better than stock IMO). He has them back now & is using perforated suede pads, the same ones you’re using (I believe). Hard to imagine that Aeolus sound could get even better, but he tells me it does.
Re Pilot Pad, I’m a huge fan: bought my Ori w/o leather band & lambskin PP on the hard headband. Very comfortable, one of the best headphone accessories ever. I never thought to use it w/the Aeolus or Eikon, mainly for 2 reasons:
- The stock leather strap is pretty comfortable. I never felt the need to improve headband comfort on either HP; and
- My head is too big to permit the arrangement shown in your picture. W/no PP, my sliders are 2/3s down.each side. With a PP, sliders would bottom out downwards & I’d still need more.

Yeah with the Pilot Pad in place, it just fits my head with maxed out sliders. As I recall Zach actually recommends removing the leather strap and using the pilot pad over the main headband…but I’m lucky enough to have it just fit with this scenario…which makes it easy to swap between the leather pad and the Pilot Pad. I also on my Verite Open just have the Suede Strap which is also quite excellent! I have an extra one I will probably add to either my Aeolus or my Verite Closed…haven’t decided yet. Might add it to the Closed when I order the Hybrid pads for it.
Regarding the sound getting better… I actually a couple of hours after this post I had something happen, I think I am somewhere between 150hrs and 200hrs with them…they just opened up and hit another plateau…it actually floored me to have it happen while listening lol. Very stoked by them. Zach really does create a gotta have them all build quality lol… But I think I am very satisfied with my current line-up of ZMF headphones =)

I’ve heard quite a few headphones (including most of the ZMFs) and none can better the Aeolus w/Verite pads as a true all-rounder, decisively nailing the sound of every genre I try.
My fantasy is a ziricote Aeolus w/stainless steel hardware + Verite + Universal perforated suede earpads. That fantasy is paused until I hear a loaner Verite open (coming Friday). Thanks to a loaner VC, I have an idea what I’m in for: a headphone that makes me reconsider sonic beliefs & preferences.

So, I loaned my Verite Closed out to a friend to demo for a few weeks. Maybe a month. Maybe longer. Uhh, I hope I get them back.
… Anyway… So, I usually go to the ECP 3F + Auteur as my “deep listening” setup. That’s where I shut the world out and drift deep into a playlist and just listen and let the mind wander. Great pairing. Tonight I wanted to mix it up, so I pulled my bloodwood Eikon and ziricote Aeolus out, and figured I’d have some fun.
Bifrost 2 + ZDS + Aeolus sucked me in just about as fast as the Auteur setup did, in a little bassier and rich kinda way.
It still shocks me how damn good Aeolus is.
I almost hate posting pics of my desk, it always looks cheap and cluttered. I guess that’s what you get when you go cheap at Ikea.

Do you tend to prefer Auteur out of the 3F over ZDS? I heard the 3F last week and really liked it, really great solid state.

I switched over to the 3f to try it. It definitely doesn’t suck.
Staging is less wide on the 3f, but that’s more from the ZDS just having extremely great staging. Bass is more linear on the 3f by a little bit. 3f is more immediate. ZDS a touch more romantic.
It’s really hard to pick a favorite here.

The “ZMF November” event is on … as well as them having new woods for some of the LTD models.
Despite already having a Blackwood Aeolus LTD in process, I am very tempted by the Camphor Burl Aeolus LTD …
