Back on subject matter =)
Thanks for your interesting comment ā maybe too interesting to keep my account balance sane.
Will work up the courage to rob a bank ā¦ oops sorry ā¦ to give it a try.
The Aeolus just has a fine steel meshā¦Iāll try and grab a quick photo here in a bitā¦
Both aeolus and auteur have that mesh, with slightly different spec. It is officially named āBopp filterā. Zach said it was used to control treble responses.
(Zach explained a bit about bopp filter)
The first prototype Verite had the filter which was taken out during rmaf last year, listening to some constructive feedback from show visitors.
Perceptibly (to me) absence of that filter made verite sound less closed. I still believe auteur and aeolus need bopp mesh to tame trebles though.

Thank you, I forgot about his video! This explains it way better lol
Some non-sonic findings
I didnāt notice the followings until these two were directly compared side by side today.
- Aeolus has stronger clamping. Auteur barely pushes cheeks in comparison. And due to this, weight distribution seems better with Aeolus.
- Aeolus is big head friendlier. With my big skull, I had to get the adjustment fully extended with Auteur. As shown in the photo, Aeolus had no problems with maximum-3.
- And Aeolus is much lighter. Of course Ziricote is 37% lighter than African Blackwood. But even if considering it, 572g vs 439g is a huge gap (both measured with my kitchen scale). Note that my Aeolus has a Mg chassis, which also contributed to lightweight.
There are six pairs of ZMF pads at the moment (three suedes and three lambskins). Iām happily hesitating about which pads to roll next.
#1 and 2 can both be corrected or adjusted by bending the headband.
Yeah, that sounds reasonable. I may have to bend more forcefully.
Determining go-to pads for Aeolus was fairly easy, partly because I already tested various pads with Aeolus when it was on a loan. My preference hasnāt change since then ā which is Universe Suede pads. For your reference, my pad choice for Auteur was Eikon-Lambskin. Itās a bit interesting I chose the brightest pads for Aeolus and the darkest pads for Auteur.
To me, Aeolus with its stock pads (Universe Lambskin) was fun but a bit off vocal and more laid-back than I would like. Universe suede pads equate tonal balance to the extent Iād dial in.
I think (with my current rig) I still prefer my Auteur, but Aeolus with this setting really has its own wonder that couldnāt be easily replaced.
Verite awaiters had better check the status. Mine has just been shipped. Excited!
Several have now flipped to āQCā. Iām still in Assembly. But then I see another unit with the same status thatās already in its ownerās hands. No reason at all that things couldnāt have moved more than one step between status-sheet updates of course.
Maybe I ordered a B1G1 special. Hereās hoping you get yours soon! Iād love to check out all the diff varietiesā¦or should i say verities?
Iām definitely looking forward to seeing the actual wood on my Ziricote pair, but Iām not really suffering in the mean time. Iāve been enjoying my Pheasantwood for about four months (which makes my review one of the longer ones it took me to get done/published).
The next few should be pretty rapid-fire in comparison - they more electronically focused which I find much easier to write about for some reason.
Called it.
Mine shipped also.
Mine also!!!
I realized I collected a fairly wide spectrum of ZMF cables.
(From left to right: stock flat, ofc upgrade, atmos-c, verite silver)
My outdated iphone camera canāt capture verite silverās real beauty. Oh well.
Trust me. This looks and feels much gorgeous and luxurious in person.
I will later report back how I feel/perceive differently across these cables. Of course it could be 100% placebo though.
Love my zmfs.
My aeolus and verite differ slightly (but noticeably) in color tone regardless of the same wood (ziricote). Itās good not to feel redundant.
All sound really good. More importantly, they really sound different from each other. Enough to keep them all.
PS. current pad allocation:
- Verite lamb pads on Auteur headphone
- BE2 lamb pads on Aeolus headphone
- Auteur suede pads on Verite headphone
Not my optimal allocation (I am exploring all possible combinations ) but still very enjoyable.
Just noticed that there would be nice discount for ZMF headphones on upcoming canjam socal.
ZMFheadphones
$300 off Verite
$200 off Auteur, Aeolus, Atticus, and Eikon
