ZMF Vérité - Open-Back Dynamic Headphone - Official Thread

Thanks for the reply!

789, 887 and 888(what I have) basic iterations of each other.

Guess the hybrids or the tubes more of interest, make the Verite shine?

And I guess any OTL design won’t run the Beyer Headset too well, only 32 ohm. Though it takes more juice than the Verite does to reach same volume on the 888.

Oh and I’m in Australia. Some things bit harder to source or get working, ZDT Jr for example, none around and 110V.

EDIT: Added some porn below.

I don’t have those headphones but I am looking at ZMF for 2020 if possible and I would second a LYR3/Bifrost2 combo from Schiit. I have the same Amp as you as my desktop setup the SMSLSP200 THX and the SMSLSU8 for a DAC and while I think the Amp is actually not too bad for the price with pretty solid measurements, the SMSL SU8 DAC just sounds a bit cold and sterile when paired with the THX amps. It just doesn’t seem to mesh as well for my setup, especially after hearing how well the LYR3/Bifrost2 sounds. I wonder if you might be experiencing the same thing @BuffaloWing ?

Once I started listening to my LYR3/Bifrost2 set up its hard to go back to the more sterile sounding THX Amp/Dac SMSL setup.

Could be it hey. Maybe a Topping D50S with a Lyr 3 might have better synergy.

Even with Universe pads on, some tracks just sound a bit dull.

When the right track comes on, these things are incredible. But I do feel the Amp isn’t the match for them. Think something less clinical would suit more. Don’t see Zach himself running a THX for his cans…

Try the LYR 3 with your Topping 50S, if it doesn’t pair as well as you would like add the Bifrost 2. I made the mistake of finding another forum which I will leave nameless that bases the majority of their recommendations on measurements which is important don’t get me wrong. This pushed me towards the SMSL THX and the SMSL SU8 thinking they as some forum members said were end game, lol.

At first I thought, hey these sound really good, and they did at first compared to what I used to have. Then I discovered headphones.com and this forum and started doing more homework, getting more advice from lots of down to earth audio loving people.

The iFi IDSD Micro Black Label was my next amp/DAC combo and I still have it and love it. Their Burr Brown implementation is simply WOW to me. Now my Schiit Stack and my iFi are my favorite two listening stations. Honestly all my SMSL stuff is my least favorite listen now, lol. You live and you learn. What I do like about the THX amp/SMSL SU8 is it doesn’t color the headphones/Speakers really much at all leaning to a very analytical sound, so when I audition new stuff I know fairly close what the sound is from the manufacturer or recording artist, if that makes sense. Then I listen via my other amps/dacs to hear how they sound via them.

Amir brother. I mean Amen. Lets leave the other forums nameless.

I was going to get the iFi Micro Black Label a while back, never did. Maybe I should have :frowning:

That other forum led me down the same path. The sound and experience were underwhelming.

I seriously love it, if I had to only keep one amp/Dac I would probably keep that just because it’s portable too but powerful enough to drive nearly anything. Thank goodness we don’t have to keep just one Amp/Dac as selection is the spice of life lol!

I don’t think you will be disappointed but it also depends on what you like. I haven’t talked to anyone that’s heard it yet that didn’t like it and even all the guys that reviewed it from the other forum and YouTube reviewers I watched all agreed it is a great listen! Hit up @taronlissimore and @andrew if your considering it they are amazing to shop with!

I’m in Australia though. Basically have two online stores that sell things to choose from. They are down here, for basically same price. Don’t seem to have any Australia tax on them thankfull.

Can you get Schiit Audio there too?

I can order direct from Schiit. Or a Aus store does do them, albeit marked up a bit.

Would you both with the DAC in the Lyr 3? I like the neatness of a all in one, but also can’t stand background noise, and with a single USB going in, can be harder to diagnose/get rid of.

Also no idea on how the Multibit compares to a Topping D50S.

I shot you a response via the Schiit thread as I think we can get some more opinions over on that thread too @BuffaloWing

On the topic of your Verite Opens did you audition any of the other ZMF cans before making your Driscoll on those?

Too easy. Will have a read over there.

No I didn’t. Really isn’t many ZMF headphones in Australia. And they rarely come up for sale. No stores here stock them at all, anyone here that has them has ordered from Zach, or managed to get a used pair.

And in Brisbane we have…ZERO… headphone stores. Literally none to audition things. So its either find someone locally and hope they can lend a pair, or buy blind. I had been researching what Open set I might like, and a pair of near new Verites came up in Brisbane. So I jumped on them, and have been eating packet noodles ever since.

Hahaha :joy: I bet they sound incredible! I want to get a pair this year, I am probably going to start with the Aeolus first, a little more affordable.

Posted in other thread too, but its Schiit only.

Narrowed my desires down to something not analytical and detailed oriented as the THX.

So something smoother I guess, maybe bit more punch down low (can’t get enough, these can hit hard).

I’m damn close to hitting order on that SW51. Its hard to know with SBAF, they swoon over various things. Like a certain website and its followers telling me the SP200 is the worlds best Amp.

Yeah, it is always tough when you can’t listen to stuff first. I think for you if you plan on using Planar headphones in conjunction with your ZMF stuff having something that plays nice with them all is important. I have planar cans I love too so that’s why I went with the LYR3 after great advice from everyone on this forum. If money were no object though based on what I have learned from @ProfFalkin @TylersEclectic and @Torq I think a pure OTL Tube amp would be one of the best options for just your ZMF stuff. My knowledge currently in that area is very limited though so take that with a grain of salt.

I’m replying to your posts so much its prompting me to “include others”. Damn forums, leave me alone :stuck_out_tongue:

Yes, trying to source a second hand Lyr 3 now. Problem with a lot of Schiit too is its only 1 input voltage. So I can’t just buy off eBay or Head-Fi, its all 110v gear. Don’t want a step up transformer under my feet too.

There is a bit of risk here, obviously. You haven’t heard it. Our preferences might differ. The stock tubes may not sound like the mullard tubes I heard. Consider the choice carefully.

I caution you because I’ve been burned by glowing recommendations on products myself. I don’t want to be the guy who said something nice and have someone resent it later.

With that said, I honestly think the SW51+ is a better pairing with the Verite as I heard it. I won’t back down from that opinion.

Yeah, same with anything. Every forum seems to have a leaning toward certain products too. (all forums like the Verite :P)

Might have change to grab a Valhulla 2 though. Might be worth a dabble for the time being? Topping D50S to the Val.

Anyone tried the Auralic Taurus MK2?

Can get a refurb unit for 660 USD …

stuck between auteur teak or verite silk/ziricote (but brushed steel) =/
