Thanks Fabio!

I like to think I’m spontaneous, but I tend to play the long game.

@TylersEclectic, let us know the song you mentioned where you heard people walking in the studio. We should probably write these moments down and share to others*.

This is a similar discussion I had with @Chrono a few days ago. Now I hear guitar plucks, squeaks in many more songs** – the sloppy guitar players – at least. Is this because I purchased a high end headphone? Nope. You guys did and let the others know. I just let myself to be open and absorb this info.

I suspect this is what reviewers call separation (or instrument layering of some sort), and some headphones probably make this more evident so the brain can pick it more easily. But that does not mean low/mid-Fi gear cannot deliver the same info, for instance.

Cheers. :beers:

*E.g.: having a “Bloopers” thread to point out these imperfections (or masked information) that it was initially noticeable with a specific setup. No merit to be judged out from it. Just on a sharing basis.
** Songs from the 80s with tons of reverb are typical examples.

I honestly can’t recall the track  but I just had this conversation with some other folks… I’ll do my best to remember to mark down these tracks in the future with time stamps.

It’s difficult to explain haha

When I say instrument separation, I am Mostly referring to how distinct each layer composing a single track is. For example, (I’ll use the Beatles as an example, as per usual) the Beatles recorded several instruments and vocals in one single track (their songs usually had 4 tracks available for mixing), so on a headphone with good instrument separation, those different components to a track will be very clearly defined and separated from each other. To make it simpler, pretend you were listening in mono, and even though it’s mono, you can still very clearly hear all the different vocals and instruments.

I also apply this to instruments. Say there is a piano chord played. In a headphone with great instrument separation it is easier to hear each individual note composing the chord, instead of being able to only hear the “overall” chord. Does this make sense? I’m struggling to explain.

And then I also think of micro dynamics when listening to instruments because these are things that are present when playing instruments in real life. You can hear and feel the pressure with which instruments are played in real life, it’s the interaction between musicians and their instruments. Headphones with good micro dynamics will able to reproduce that, to some extent. At least that’s how I think of it.

No worries. I’m familiar with a few aspects of music production. Even though one mixes with 64 tracks (or buses), we’ll still end out with a master track.

I forgot to mention about the “attack” of the different instruments. This is common in guitar world. That could also be a reason for better layering.

No need to objectivize what is subjective. It may work sometimes though.

I think separation is the ability to dissect Detail (the small elements that comprise the whole of a composition) and accurately portray them within the Soundstage (depth and spacing of sounds and it’s origin within the space of the recording).

Yeah hahaha it isn’t meant to be taken as objective, or absolute in any way. I don’t think that there is anything in this hobby that is really clear-cut, or Universally defined. I was just sharing my thoughts on what these terms mean to me, and how I attempt to apply them to my descriptions of the listening experience.

Excellent video @Resolve!

So many excellent, and very valid points regarding evaluation. I would even add how the amplification has the potential to color the sound as well. Looking forward to the test tracks list.

Great job. :+1:t4:
