Headphone Cables/Builds w/ Pictures - DIY

Not my first pick in cable either.

BUT. Well known. People want them and willing to pay for them. And they sell the DIY wire, so I can make them.

I think my next task if to find a good 22 awg wire and sleeve it, then do a 4 braid cable. Any recommendations appreciated.

Might need to get a solder pot too, open my options to the LITZ wires. Tried to tin some with just the iron and whilst I got it done, bit of a pain. Maybe there is a trick to it I haven’t come across.

ZMF is selling DIY cable kits now I think as well…

I like the idea of these zmf cable kits. Everything you need, one kit.

No sourcing wire from one vendor, xlr connectors from Mouser, Y splitters from some shady ebay listing, etc.

It also means ZMF doesn’t have to spend the time building it, and trust me cables take LOTS of time. Saves you money.

If I didn’t already have more zmf cables than I could shake a stick at, I’d probably have built a few already. And their silver cables are really worth it. My favs.

I noticed that but never looked at them. I should. I need to smell something burning, might try buggering up a cable.

I think only one of them isn’t LITZ. So just be careful if you don’t have a solder pot or worked on litz before.

Question for you, and any others making them;

With a shielded multi-core cable. Do you connect the shield to the ground at the amp end. Be that the ground lug/chassis of a 4pin XLR or the ground of a SE along with the other two conductors?

Cake!!

Have a good one!

My cake day for me was browsing yesterday haha. I’m a day ahead!

Generally, yes, in both cases.

Headphone end should be floating.

Omg. You should start selling. I’m interested :star_struck:

That is what I do too.

The interesting (I guess if life is that dull it is) part is I asked the Moon “technician” directly if they connect their shield to the ground at the amp end, and he said that they do.

Then someone sent me a legit Moon Black Dragon cable to reterminate and the shield had just been cut short, heatshrink sealed and just the 4 conductors into the XLR. Plus all the fkn hot glue they love sticking in.

Side note; Forza Audioworks load the last inch of the 8wire braid and all the connector with black hot glue. Thankfully if you spray enough isopropl in and around it starts to break apart and let go, still messy though.

Just finished this bad boy. 4x18awg :S

Not sure if braiding is cathartic or infuriating.

I got halfway and slipped on a wire and they re-arranged. Brain couldnt’ figure out where I was up to :frowning:

Had to start again. Probably a easy trick to figuring it out.

Thanks bud!

Anyone have any pure silver wire sitting there unused? Looking for maybe 25 feet or so to make a 4 braid cable with. Just hard to find good stuff in small quantities.

Gave it another go. Made a cable for myself. Silver plated. 4x22awg.

I do not enjoy the braiding. But I like the end product.

I was thinking to make a modular cable too, but now I don’t know which connector or method (1. two cables connected using for example a LEMO connector, or 2. one cable using the OEAudio multi plug similar to the Dunu plug, Dita awesome plug etc.). What should be the more durable and flexible way to do? If the first option, which connector could be the sturdiest, smallest and lightest? I saw the LEMO plugs, the Hirose HR10, the YC 8, others suggestions?

Am I right in assuming with the HiRose product labelling. I want the Plug with Pins (7P-4P) and the corresponding Jack with Sockets (7J-4S)

Or the 5 or 6 pin versions if I feel that way inclined.

These look great how do they sound?
