Welcome @C-Bass!
Hello and welcome @SmoothDistortion.
Yeah welcome @SmoothDistortion glad you made your way here
Hey everybody! Iām from Tennessee, and Iāve been playing music myself for about 3 years and just started getting into recording and mixing. I realized quickly that I was going to need a better pair of headphones. Currently Iām in high school, so I have a budget of about $150. Right now Iām only mixing with GarageBand on ios, but I plan to get a PC pretty soon. Iām still unknowledgeable about whether I should buy a closed or open back pair of headphones. On the closed back side of things Iām leaning towards the AKG K371. On the open back side of things Iām looking at the Philips SHP9500. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
Welcome, Elijah.
I think that AKG would be a solid choice for recording/engineering. @metal571 referenced the K371 on another thread when āneutralityā was brought up.
Iām sure someone else will chime in with more recommendations.
Good luck, and I look forward to hearing more about your journey.
Youāll never know how many people that do recording and mixing look at GarageBand, and just wished that they had something as good when they started. So, what instrument(s) do you play?
Oh yes welcome.
Which reminds me - welcome to all the rest of the people Iāve missed over the past 10 or so days.
Thanks. I donāt know how to start my own thread yet so Iām replying to this one. If anyone has questions about any of the gear Iāve had extended periods of time with, Iāll be happy to answer them.
Headphones: ZMF Atticus (camphor), Focal Elex, 6XX, TR-X00 Mahogany & Purple Hearts
IEMs: FiiO FH7, FA7, and FH5
Main amp/dac comboes; Asgard 3 + Modi Multibit and a CTH + SDAC. Chord Mojo and Dragonfly Cobalt for portable use
Looking forward to talking about gear in the future

Iām Rudi and I hail from Latvia. Besides this community Iām also fairly active on SBAF and occasionally post on HC and r/headphones if something interesting comes up. Iāve also used HF since 2011 but that place has become too commercial for me.
I guess some of you might know Sonarworks. I was with the company for 5 years until August 2019 and did PR and community relations. Iād like to think that I was the initiator of their non-pro software True-Fi, but that pivoted from audiophiles to regular listeners rather fast. During my time there Iāve listened to about a hundred headphones and compared the impressions to measured data. In the later years I also wrote many of the blog posts and gear reviews there.
Currently my listening setup consists of two systems.
My main everyday headphone setup is PC->Yggy USBG5/A2->Torpedo 3 Belleson reg/all CCSās/Mundorfs/Cinemags->Neumann NDH 20 (SW Ref 4 calibrated)
Then thereās the speaker rig. The brains of it is a Mac mini which acts as a streamer and DSP box. It runs Reaper where Fabfiter EQ band divides two 200l 2x12" ported subs and a pair of Neumann KH310ās. Everythingās also room EQāed by Sonarworks Reference 4 and DAC duties are done by an RME ADI-2 Pro AE where AN1/2 goes to tops and AN3/4 to subs.
Iāve done my share of DIY amp building and currently Iām tackling a Gilmore CFA3 project so I donāt go mad with the quarantine. Mouser shipment is inbound, so fingers crossed!
I hope I can contribute to this community with my experience in both the technical side of the hifi and give an insight into marketing and business!
Welcome Rudi. Thatās an impressive background.
Glad to see you here on the forum.
Welcome to the community @SmoothDistortion @Hrodulf !
Welcome to the community @YevaeS !
Hi @pennstac, I play guitar the, both electric and acoustic. I have enough music theory knowledge to figure out how to play chords on piano, but guitar is the instrument I know most about.
Larrivee is my favorite company for steel string guitars. Theyāre wonderful instruments. I grew up loving blue grass with them. Many people donāt enjoy that kind of music. I have yet to find a more fun genre of songs to learn though.
