I carry the rig on my tripod, been doing it for years, once you get used to the balance its not a big deal. Now walking 5 miles could be another story, or climbing hills, or running from some crazed bear LOL
Yeah, wouldn’t want to hike with it. However the 500mm f5.6 PF lens I used to hike with all the time, and that is one amazingly compact and sharp birding rig on a D500. 750mm at 5.6 and sharp as hell. Loved it but sold it at the beginning of Covid when I lost some salary. I think some 1400+ grams…
It’s actually the lens that caught the red tail in my profile picture now that I think about it!
On the discussion about fog / bad air / dust in the picture: instead of tweaking the image in post-processing, you might want to bring out the foggy-ness. So you need something with a bigger contrast in the picture (i.e. put something in the foreground). I found this picture I took in China (and yes, that is pure bad air quality there). I know, not easy with long lenses and/or animals as objects.
Also, I can relate to that heavy equipment - I am only using a backpack for my big gear nowadays; using shoulder bags ruined my back. And for “smaller” exploration I just take the camera and my nifty-fifty.
It brought this image to mind…
At work they said they wanted some pics of spring and spring flowers for the newsletter. So I took a few quickies with natural light and the Fujifilm T-30 using the 60mm “almost macro” lens. No tripod, just handheld. The Lillies of the Valley are just coming up, there will be more and better soon.

Oh yeah, and there are a few of these “flowers” showing up in the lawn. If they were hard to grow, I’d be paying $29.95 for a flat of 4 at the garden shop.
Not a photo show off, but this new construction across the way from my office looked pretty erie (aerie?) against the clouds. It’s supposed to be some sort of storage facility, but I prefer to think of it on days like today as “The Demesne of the Grey Eminence”.
Eerie
Erie is lake and a canal.
Aerie is an elevated position or nest.
Erie is also a PA city. I meant eerie but you know, spellcheck knows better. And I was punning with Aerie. But that’s for the birds -— and possibly harpies. Which mises the Marx.
Happy Cake Day @pennstac.
Some fun shots from this weekend. We picked up our '79 Scout from a shop in Ames, Iowa (USA) and drove it back to Denver, Colorado. We had the engine swapped for a 3rd gen LS V8 and it’s like a new truck! These pics are shot on Kodak 800 and developed/scanned at home.
Lovely. If you don’t mind telling, where is that lovely place? Not that we think about travelling …
We are moored outside Siglufjorud in Iceland.
