I’ve ran 3 different tubes with the same result at that time.
• Default JJ tube
• Sylvania Bad Boy
• Psvane CV181-T Mk.2
I don’t know what are the chance of 3 different tubes doing the same thing but then again I’m not a tube expert
I don’t think it’s a design issue but heard a few same reports from different forums which led me believe it’s a component tolerance issue with certain production lot. Yeah, I’m just glad I didn’t have to ship it back at the end.
Maybe but unlikely since I tried both Spotify and bought/downloaded the flac file from HDTracks to eliminate this possibility. Also, the issue was not suddenly disappear one day. It was gradually harder to reproduce as days went by.
Overall, it’s such a wonderful hybrid amp. I enjoy every moment tube rolling with it
I’m happy with the iFi xDSD, but sooner or later I will get a Schiit Bifrost 2, which I can pair with the Lyr3 and using the balanced output, my STAX amplifier.
I’m using Bifrost 2 and really happy with the pairing.
They are driving the ZMF Verite Silkwood.
I paired it with SMSL SU-8 before and it’s not quite what I’m looking for.
Trying to figure where i will put this on the desk if i buy it…Schiit list the Lyr as 2.25" high. is that with the stock tube in?
If not exactly how tall is the whole unit with tube?
Thanks
It’s going to be 4 - 5" tall. Uses an octal. I would put a socket saver under the tube to give it more cooling. The Lyr3 will get plenty warm. so you’ll want to have it in the wide open, or with a small fan on it.
Just a bit. It’s really not fair until I have the tube working for a day or so. But yes. I like it. It looks great in the dark AND in the light. I think I can be unequivocal - the stock TungSol upgrade is a fine tube. The RCA and the Bad Boy were more costly, but I don’t think made enough difference to justify cost. The Treasure Globe however is not just cosmetically nice, but audibly better enough that even my ears can hear it. Of course, it ain’t cheap.
Well the Lyr 3 has a tube sticking up, so you can’t put things on top, unless you have a rack. And it’s only part tube sound because it IS a hybrid. Of course, that can be a strength also, as it handles a wide range of headphone impedences.
Alrighty. So, I have a Focal Clear Pro. That’s the most relevant item in my chain, which I desire to complement. Secondarily, I’ve an SMSL M300 DAC and SP200 amp (a THX AAA 888 model with a bit less power than the others, but just as much transparency, if a loss of detail and soundstage). I’m looking to replace the amp first and foremost; later, I will be definitely getting a Bifrost 2 DAC. Honestly, tonality is of little issue because of the Clear’s handling of EQ, especially in the 40-120Hz range. Rather, I’m looking for an amp with more soundstage capabilities (depth and width are equally important), that won’t lose any detail (or at least not much). There’s a thread specifically for amp recommendations, but I’m drawn to the Lyr 3 and the Jotunheim because of that thread and because of Torq (who I won’t tag because he’s got life to live on the ocean, right now) and others’ recommendations. Apparently, they’re some good Schiit. Both have been mentioned on this specific thread, understandably.
@lost33 You’ve got me incredibly interested in the Lyr 3 due to multiple posts of yours on here. You seem to absolutely love it. You also happened to have started the official thread for the Jotunheim. So, my assumption is that you’ve had significant experience with both of these amps, though your posts on here are newer than your review of the Jotunheim on its thread, so while you seemed to love the Jot, you also seem to more recently love the Lyr. I’m definitely buying one of them. Considering my desires as stated said above, which would you recommend for my preferences?
@BuffaloWing You seem 100% sold on the Lyr 3 as the #1 choice. Your enthusiasm is convincing. More so, you own the exact same amp that I’m looking to replace. Yet more so, you’ve had other [relatively] famous/popular amps such as the Bottlehead Crack. Even more so to this specific question of mine, you also tried the Jotunheim, but described it as losing too much detail. Yet STILL more so, you said you don’t like messing with “fiddly tubeness” and I absolutely feel you on this point, because I don’t want to spend a bunch of time and money on finding the “perfect” tube, nor with inconsistent performance. Damn! Ok, all that said, with enough time gone by for your experience to have settled in, which do you suggest to replace my SP200: Lyr 3 or Jotunheim?
