Thanks everyone. As a fan of various forms of metal, not every recording is spectacular and I am looking for a way to trim some brightness or boost some low end here and there. I’ll check this out!
Installed the ES9028 DAC card today in the Schiit Jotunheim A (though PCB says R). Pretty easy to do, trick is to push down on the headphone XLR connector pending the PCB a little so the pins line up.
(says Jot-R!)
(sadly forgot to take a pic with the card slotted in, so only rear shot)
That seems like a simple-enough install. Please let us know what you think of its sound.
The Schiit Loki Max is now listed as shipping in 6 to 8 weeks. Remote control. Presets. Balanced. Technical superiority mumbo jumbo. $1,499.
I just pulled the trigger on a Lokius. I have the original Loki - might want to get rid of it. Except it’s Silver, and matches my home stuff. Now where do I have black? I know, in the cabinet in my office. I’m trying the Loki there tomorrow, between the iFi Zen Blue V2 and my amp. And that’s probably where I will swap in the Lokius and bring the Loki home. But there could be a place for it here too. Or is that two…
Well, 1 can’t be us, you kinda need two of them…. That’s what puts the “us” in Loki…
I was looking at the Yggy for a future upgrade and found this article by someone who had the opportunity to blind review all 3 revisions over 2.5 hours:
The LIM was their favourite for cleanest reproduction as you yourself mentioned. OG second, and MIL was actually quite blurred and hazy. I am now looking at the LIM as my Yggy when I pull the trigger and get one!
“Let’s cut to the final chase scene before going over the nuances of listening to each DAC. By far, my favorite version is Yggdrasil Less Is More. That’s right, the least expensive model, with the least number of bits (16 bit DAC chips, 17 bits total), sounded the best. It wasn’t even close. The second place DAC was Yggdrasil OG, the original Yggy that I’ve listened to for years in my system. My least favorite DAC was Yggdrasil More is Less. You read that right, the best measuring multi bit DAC ever, sounded the worst to me. This conclusion wasn’t a close call.”
I came across this write up as well, and I’ve been trying to decide between the Yggy LIM, Sonnet Morpheus, and Holo Spring 3 KTE. The Yggy, especially at this lower price point, seems by far a terrific value. And I’ve read 15 or so impressions (not all of which were full reviews), and I’ve not encountered a bad review.
As for how I’m going about deciding which one to get, I’ve slowly gathered some useful insights. For example, I’ll be connecting primarily via usb, and apparently the Morpheus doesn’t sound its best when using its usb input. Not sure about the Spring 3 KTE, though.
I’ve been monitoring the listings for a pre-owned version of one or the other. That said, seems to me like the Schiit warranty isn’t transferable, which worries me a bit.
For prior Holo Audio DACs, I2S input was always reported to sound the best, though subjectively I couldn’t hear a major difference between USB and I2S when I owned the Holo Audio Cyan, Spring 1 KTE and Spring 2 KTE. The new USB module in the Spring 3 KTE trickled down from the May series may even the playing field even more. That said, having a separate DDC has it’s own benefits as well.
I am mulling over selling my Yggy LIM if you ever are interested in a used unit! Feel free to PM me.
For all intents and purposes the Yggy LIM is more of a neutral signature, the Holo DACs are on the warmer side.
The Modi 3E is a great buy at $129. I definitely prefer it over my Modi 3+ and Modius. It’s giving my beloved Modi multibit a run for the money. Another great budget DAC from Schiit.
Hey, are there Europeans who ordered from Schiit US and are willing to tell me about the experience/process? Thanks! Has schiit-europe ever had any stock? I’m checking the website but nothing is coming in so I’m thinking of ordering from the US directly…
Schiit EU has stock now and again, as does the UK, but it usually sold out very quickly.
Ordering from the US means you will have to pay tax and import duty on the top of the price.
Depending on your country, it will be a different amount but usually it is around 40% of the price.
As an example, to buy an Asgard from US to Spain, it would be:
$250 for the amp + $55 shipping (cheapest option)
So $305 + 21% VAT (Spanish rate, this is calculated on the total of product + shipping) = $370
Plus a 4% (approx) import fee = $385
Plus whatever the courier processing fee is, which is never less than another $10 in the best case scenario.
So, in total, it’s approximately $395 in total.
To this, you need to also consider that any warranty claims will involve sending the amp back to the US in most cases.

soooo many tubes…
250 unit run limit. After that, a bunch of whining from those who missed it, but would have (probably) bought it.
I want one. Don’t know why, because it would mean I would also need a Sennheiser HD-800s.
Much more noble to dither and be the 251st in line so I can practice whining.
I want one too… because of my 800s. Very tempted, trying to hold out and hear some impressions first
EDIT: never mind, I ordered one. I’m weak😳
I want it, too. But then, I want everything, all the time, anyway.
It’s this, or three or four @ $300 tubes in a collection for my Vali 2?
I’m curious about if it sounds different, and how it sounds different, than 2 or 4 tube OTL amps. Please report back to us in “8 to 11” days, as the delivery time is 7 to 10 days. Why 10 tubes when everyone else sticks to 2, 4, or 5? Hmmmm? Do the additions increase power, range, and definition, or make it resemble the properties of a speaker tube amp?
I’d consider ordering if I was not already waiting for another amp to be delivered.
The output tubes are in parallel they increase current delivery (read power) and reduce the Output impedance 2 tubes - 1/2 the output impedance of 1, 5 is a 1/5.
The output impedance of a Cathode follower in an OTL amp is roughly 1/transconductance of the tube (give or take) which is going to be somewhere in the 100 Ohm range, so 5 gets you down to 20 ish Ohms (I think Schiit say 17 in their site).
I’m going to GUESS the low gain mode has some sort of feedback, so it’s even lower.
