I’m with you regarding the “good enough” level. I’ve two primary DAC/AMP setups as follows:
- Canever ZeroUno DAC/HPA: Amazing bit of kit. I never realized just how good a digital setup with the ESS SABRE 9018 DAC could sound. There is zero resemblance to any attributes normally associated with ESS DACs. This is due to the fact that Mario wrote his own code for filtering, along with Lundhal audio transformers. This will stay with me long term.
- Topping D900/A900: This combination can more than hold its own with much more expensive setups.
My favorite headphones are the Verum 2, Abyss Diana TC, and the Sony MDR Z1R. Do not see a need to upgrade from these.
I certainly hope the site here can regain some lost mojo. I was involved on another site where Valentine Luke and Rhody were frequently involved. I’ve enjoyed the sharing of information here, and have picked up additional knowledge as a result.
The EQ mantra does get to be a bit much at times. I occasionally try to use EQ with PGGB-RT. Sometimes it helps, but often times it makes the playback “different”, but not necessarily better.
Would like to see a thread / recommendations listing headphones that do not need EQ to sound good. There’s so much variation with recordings in general that some of the EQ arguments get to the point of being esoteric.
