My father used to say that the second happiest day of your life was the day you bought a boat. The happiest day was the day you sold the boat. He loaned it to an inexperienced acquaintance who promptly destroyed the propeller on a rock.
This evening I’ll be attending a local Unicycle-Juggling-Knife-Chainsaw-Handgun club.
Bah! Macallan dangerous? Bruichladdich is the dangerous one. After they changed hands and have some modern-day Scots running them, they turn out beautifully labeled limited edition brews like “Yellow Submarine” and “Augusta”, both of which, are sadly, empty.
Preferences on the contents are individual (Ardbeggian here), but the sheer number (and prices) of Macallan’s OBs would take a mid-sized fortunate to gather completely.
The most expensive Bruichladdich I’ve seen sold was a 1964 40 YO OB for around $3k, which is about half what an NAS bottle of Macallan Genesis bottled last year would set you back now.
Congratulations on the “Yellow Submarine” bottle kill, it was awesome.
Yes it was. I managed 2 bottles, but the it became unobtainium. I do like Ardbeg. As my friend in Scotland says, “It’s a good thing there are so many varieties, otherwise, you would come to the point where you had to say, ‘That’s whisky done.’ and have to go off in search of the perfect root beer.”
Apparently discontinued in 2010, I was very partial to Black Bottle 10 year old, a blend of mostly Islay scotch with no neutral grain spirits added. Not at all the same as the standard Black Bottle, which is very good for it’s price point - a changeup from Dewars or Black Grouse (My current go-to blend).
There are certainly over-priced scotches, but you can still get something pretty exceptional for ~$70USD, which is about the same as I pay for Booker’s. But really, is there anything more over-priced than Pappy?
Rum prices are rising rapidly on the secondary right now, so if that’s something you like, I’d be hoarding all the Four Square, Hampden, and especially Caroni (closed) as fast as you can.
Rum. Wray @ Nephew overproof. About $20 per bottle, 130 proof, white rum, tasty. For dark rum, I favor Meyer’s Planter’s Punch. Again not costly. Kraken is also OK. I’m not a big fan of spiced rums, although Mt. Gay is OK. Much of my rum gets mixed. And my Admin brings back enough Havana Club varietals for my tastes when I’ve had enough to feel high-falutin’.
So what do you want to eat when rum is the drink? Pulled Pork? Mofongo?
Usually when I drink it is for a night cap, so usually not paired with anything food related…
But rum does go good with some pulled pork.
Spiced rum favorite is Sailor Jerrys, it makes a mean dark and stormy! Plus the label is a sticker you can pull off (sticker art is on the inside), it is one of his famous pinup tattoos.
Sipping rums I’m still learning about, I have a couple on hand…diplomatico, and A couple others
I only really drink rum (other than beer and red wine) and my favourite is Barcelo. It only costs around 14€ a bottle here, in fact, it wasn’t long ago that I could get it for 7€.
The large majority of my knives are drawer-dwellers. Only 3 get everyday use: a Spyderco Delica, a $10 SanRenMu 710 that’s unnaturally effective as a letter opener, and a Victorinox Swisstool (original square style) multi-tool.
My most expensive purchase was a Busse NMSFNO (Nuclear Meltdown Special Forces Natural Outlaw) – Busse has absurd names:
The second most expensive was an original LionSteel SR1 with the titanium handle:
Though it was actually in reference to a new timepiece that I was posting. Still, while I have no new steel presently in bound, I can certainly round up a few pieces in a follow-up post.
I do have a nice Elishewitz custom folder with a Damascus blade. That might be my “nicest” piece. There are a couple more of almost-similar stature, which I’ll leave specific mention of for pictures. I have the usual collection of EDC Benchmade CQC (licensed from various designers) stuff. I think a complete set of the CRKT “KISS” models (by which I actually mean the little Ed Halligan and Ed Van Hoy models). There’s always a BK2 in the camping and hiking packs, as well as the cars.
And a few oddities … one of which looks very similar to the Flipper in @generic’s post. It’s a very funny mechanism. Rather cool. Entirely impractical, vs. a simple gravity/inertia opening into a liner-lock. It’s fascinating to play with but, mostly, seems designed to cause you to cut yourself just playing with the damn thing! I think mine’s an OTS Kershaw. Ridiculously sharp … mostly because it’s pretty much only ever cut ME.
