The Off Topic

Christmas greetings to everyone from England, where I’m back visiting family for the first time in two years. I hope you’re all having a nice day, wherever you are.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

And cheers!

Just an old modern thought, for this season of cake. It seems that those reindeer are due for a break.
They work every year through holiday nights, no union contract no animal rights.
An alternate sleigh might be what we need, and routes plotted early for reindeer to heed.
So let’s let them graze a Christmas or two, and give other reindeer a chance to serve you.

Now Karma and Krishna and Seema and Blake
Kijanna, on Tayjon and Goldberg and Snake

That’s team number one in my alternate view, so let’s go and fill my team number two.

Now Greta and Gretchen and Michelle and Butch
On Bootsy and Tootsie, and Red Cloud and Groot.

So have a good Christmas or Kwanzaa – or some – may celebrate Solstice, Hanukkah or none

But please came and join in this hobby of mine, thinking of silly old reindeer that rhyme.

Tonight I listened to Episode 2 of the new Boba Fett series on Disney+ For the purposes of this forum, I used an older 12 inch iPad Pro, Dragonfly Cobalt (glowing green) and my Grado RS1e headphones. The soundtrack is engaging, if a bit heavy on drumbeats. Episodes are released on Wednesdays and so far, I rather like them.

Image ripped off from someone else ripping off the obviously Disney+ image which I credited with the series, which is “fair use” in something that’s a review.

What I’m less certain of - and I’m sure someone will fill me in - is the seeming nod in the Disney+ universe to the DUNE universe. In that when the Tusken tribes with Boba stop the train he starts asking about “Spice” harvested with slave labor. The Tusken of Tatooine seem to be far more wasteful of water than the Freemen of Arrakis ever were, although they appear to be somewhat based on them also.

I understood absolutely nothing you just said

Here are some rutabagas for you:

  • The sheep languished blue trains suffer.
  • Windows books dogs hands run.
  • Run desk making dinner sunglasses menu.
  • Folders pile swimming red clouds.
  • Sadness cups coffee printer power outage.
  • Porch steps run come here.
  • Dogs sleep chicken pencil trees.

Do you have the Disney Plus streaming service? They have been making some television series that expand on the Star Wars universe. In 2019 and 2020 it was “The Mandalorian” Now it is “Boba Fett” named after the main character, an ex bounty hunter.

The term “Fair Use” is a legal term, pertaining to copyright law. It is what permits reviewers and others to present tiny bits of copyrighted work without permission to talk about works of art, TV shows, Movies, etc. Disney is notorious for vigorous protection of its copyrights, and prosecuting violations. This has included challenges to academic uses of longer bits of their works in classrooms. I was poking a bit of fun at Disney Corp with my caption.

I’m certain that you are familiar with Frank Herbert’s books related to DUNE, much of which are set on a desert planet “Arrakis”. Dune was made into a movie years ago, and is now being remade with a good deal of fanfare. The remake is by WARNER BROTHERS, not Disney. In the DUNE books, the desert planet warriors are somewhat similar to those portrayed in the Boba Fett series, the Tusken on the planet Tatooine. In DUNE, one of the major themes is the substance “boosterspice” which can be addictive, has properties unlocking precognition and telepathy to some extent, and which is also an anti-aging drug. It’s produced by “sandworms” deep in the desert. I was struck that in the Boba Fett show, Boba and the Tuskens attack a train and ask if it is carrying “spice”.

I hope this morning, and sober post provides adequate context.

I plan to watch the second episode with my two oldest kids today and will keep an eye out for this. I’d honestly guess it’s just coincidence, as I don’t think Star Wars has ever crossed platforms by giving a nod like that, but who knows.

There was nothing wrong with your writing of the post, it’s the content I had no clue about

Nope, and don’t you dare tell my kid there is another channel we don’t have!!

I stopped at “Return of the Jedi”

I worked with Disney some years ago, damn they had a way of making things difficult.

I vaguely remember Dune but had no idea it was being remade, although it doesn’t surprise me, everything is being remade.

It has, although I will have forgotten it by evening

Bad weather this weekend, cold, wet, and icy. Stuck at home alone. I’ve been binge watching The Mandalorian on Disney+. The Disney portrayal of Tatooine seems to continue to nod to the DUNE series. There is some sort of sand dragon (not a source of spice) that travels under the sand much as the great sandworms from Frank Herbert’s DUNE. And @SenyorC you should read the books, DUNE from the movies is like Tolkien from the movies. Until you’ve held a leather bound LOTR from Oxford University Press with parchment maps and gold lettering “Tales from the Red Book of Westmarch” on it … well it was only a 2nd edition, but still very nice.

@pennstac - I read a few things/saw youtube videos that said that Lucas got a lot of ideas for the original Star Wars movie from the novel Dune —Tatooine as a desert planet, the whole emperor thing, the skeleton c3p0 and r2d2’pass in the desert in the early scenes is a nod to the sand worms, and mention of ‘spice mines of Kessel’, for a start. So Herbert was already an influence (along with Kurosawa-too bad there aren’t more things influenced by his great movie ‘Ikiru’ Ikiru movie review & film summary (1952) | Roger Ebert) on everything Star Wars, and then I’m guessing with all the attention on the new Dune movie they pulled some more influences from that (I hear throat singing in both! although I’ve only seen the trailers for Boba Fett,)
