What music have you been listening to this past week?

Smashing Pumpkins at Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Native American tribe that owns this Casino is the same tribe from Last of the Mohicans. It’s located in Uncasville, CT for those who have read the book or seen the movie.

Jane’s Addiction and Poppy were the opening acts

for those that like female vocals with tons of inflection, the Algerian Souad Massi just released a new album. Get your tubes glowing and check this out:

Dick Hyman’s From the Age of Swing, on Reference Recordings. Also The Hot Club of San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Bounce.

Listened to this for a bit but kind of structured energetic for my taste. Try this:

Nice to have a moment to share musical favourites. There are so many! No technical discussion, just the musical gems that stirs our imagination and touches our hearts. Alison Goldfrapp, Terje Rypdal, Melody Gardot, to name a few. Also an extraordinary singer from Tibet by the name Dechen Shak-Dagsay. The album’s title: Dewa Che. This is contemplative, healing music of the highest quality. The opening piece ‘Chenresi’ is a perfect example: timeless and mesmerizing.

Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll probably spend the better part of tomorrow listening to it as Mondays are email heavy and meeting light. I’ve heard some of Frahm’s music before (mainly his collaborative work with Ólafur Arnalds), but I didn’t realize he released something last month.

Regards,
Vic

It is nice to have this forum and this topic. As @Ren1 above says “just the musical gems that stirs our imagination and touches our hearts.” True words, especially when we get into some of these longer pieces and crafting sonic landscapes that include ambient. I’ve done a lot of productive work to The Orb, and daydreamed to Jarre’s Amazônia.

Really digging the new album from Caroline Shaw + Attacca Quartet. A stunning composition masterfully played & recorded.

Fabulous recording! And her 2021 album Let the Soil Play Its Simple Part with Sō Percussion is excellent as well.

That’s great! I like it

This is a double posting - because I posted it in Classical Music Discussion first, and had an unpleasant reminder that nobody had posted there for 7 months.

In my office, between clients. I love the sound of expertly played twin (or double) reed instruments. And am a fan of late Baroque music. (And Hepplewhite or Regency furniture instead of IKEA). Handel chamber or small ensemble is just exquisite. This is a nice recording and fine rendition.

Was interested in trying the Audeze LCDi3 “IEMs” on the standard cable with an EQ setting. For the past year or so since I got them, I’ve only used Cipher cable or the BT Cipher cable. But I’ve been poking into the internets (I think it’s like a series of tubes…) and found that some people prefer to use the standard cable and EQ. So I tried that using the ROON EQ for the Audeze LCDi3/4. It did sound very good. For some reason I wanted to listen to some Mahavishnu Orchestra, and I navigated to the above album.

Curiously, I found that Narada Michael Walden was the drummer, and he ALSO was drummer for some of Chick Corea’s RTF bands, and ALSO on the Jeff Beck album I love and ALSO and ALSO … the man gets around. I did see him live a year (ish) ago with Journey in Grantville PA. We were front row, but there is a pro video YouTube. (I did a recording on my iPhone too, but it’s not pro quality. - full song, of course, and hey, I don’t put that on YouTube)

So, this is hardly an audiophile recording. And it sure ain’t my musical bag under normal circumstances (though I’ve been to my fair share of musical theater). But this as a historical document is absolutely bonkers. She’s 18!!!?! and has the audience eating out of her hand, and she’s hilarious, and it’s 1962 and a tiny club in the west village. You gotta give this a try, unless all you’ve ever listened to is EDM and/or you’ll detest yourself for allowing me to convince you to listen to Barbara Streisand for 5 minutes.
