I got one of those, when they came out. It’s got Yaxi Sennheiser pads on it now, replaced the originals just last year. Gotta still love it.
Nice. Congrats.
Do they really scale to the infinite?
Very nice
Hope you enjoy! They’re one of my favorites.
Nice!! I was just drooling over this on their site today. Would like to hear your impressions of it when you get some time in. Congrats!!
Hardly, but you have to love the plastic screen grid (which they called a “carbon fiber” look). I was earning crap money back in those days, and the 580 was all I could justify. I guess in was about 1997, because my work buddy got hell from his wife for buying the new HD-600. I was more cautious. After all, my sweetie told me that she married me for my stereo, and this wasn’t something she could really share. And I’d just bought a NAD CD player earlier that year (which she did like). She’s a Barbie, and I’d started playing AQUA’s “Barbie Girl” when I wanted to get her out to party.
The Yaxi pads do help it a lot.
Never saw that Senn DSP toy before though.
A hearty congrats! This thing sounded faaaaantastic when I tried it at CanJam
Yes, its a HD580, they MUST scale to infinity and beyond, or there is something wrong with your ears.
My scaling is only to my setup. I have no tubes. Yes, shoot me down now.
I do like the 580 actually. It fits my preferences. It has a little extra treble and space than the 600, and does make the 600 sound very dampened. My 580 is a tad brighter than the 600, but not obnoxious, and actually very fine for me.
…and?
What do you think?
In order to not blow up the “What’s in the Box” thread with impressions, I’ll post more detailed feedback in a few days in my streamer shootout thread.
Short, and initial summary is that the DDC is easily an improvement over USB alone. Blacker background and slightly tighter transients. This checks out with measurable performance of DDCs in the jitter and noise floor domains. In comparison to the ifi Zen Stream, things get closer. My initial impression (only about an hour or so of A/B listening) is that the Zen Stream has a (very very very) slightly lower noise floor, but somehow has this slight fuzziness to it (I’m talking about transients and crispness of the sound), and that the DDC bests it in this category. Both units very very good, but as of right now, I’m finding myself preferring the DDC. However, sometimes initial impressions don’t win out, so I’m going to give it a few days before making a more concrete decision on preference.
Wait, where can I get a UV cleaner that fits a headphone? I’d spend good money on that as someone who is also a bit addicted to older Sennheisers.
I use the HomeSoap. It can fit small headphones, and ones you can take apart. The HD580 can be taken apart relatively easy. I use it or a hearing aid uv/de-humidifier all the time for IEMs since I get loaners for reviews often.
They also have larger UV cleaners but they do cost quite a bit.
I don’t know the long-term effects of using it on a plastic sennheiser if you use it often, but it didnt damage the hd580 when i used it for a few mins. Its safer on metal surfaces. Some plastics, at the surface, may break down from UV over lengthy exposures.
Take it to a tanning salon and either put the headphones on their own in there, or wear it on and listen to music while getting a nice even tan
Forget bikini tan lines, get a Senny tan line
I’ll be posting impressions after I get more hours of listening in. Lousy timing for it to arrive, I’ve been far busier than I would like and have not had much time even later in the night. Very early thoughts are that it seems to make every headphone I own sound extraordinary, the variety of taps make this a true end game amp, it plays nice with everything! Again I’ll have a much more in depth impression posted when i get some time to listen more and articulate what I’m hearing.
