What's in the box!

Sometimes you can work around this by using any of the buttons to reset the countdown. Try a volume up then volume down to get another 10 minutes. Not ideal but maybe better than losing the connection.

Excellent tip - I will try that the next time I approach the 10 minutes.

Good to know that they are working on a solution to the problem.

Sooooo, I’ve been contemplating getting a cd player for about a year or so. Really wanted something to play my cd collection but also wanted to try sacd which I’ve never heard.
I’ve looked at used Oppo 105s, 205s which are highly praised and ridiculously expensive. I’ve spent hours looking into Marantz, Technics, Levinson, Bryson, Mcintosh and on and on. I could never convince myself to spend a minimum of a $1,000 (and that would be for a used, several year old player) to see if I would like, let alone prefer my cds over streaming and downloaded music.

Well today I went to a rummage sale and found this for 2 bucks…

Didn’t know if it worked and didn’t know anything about this model. Figured it was worth the $2 risk😆
Hooked it up coax to the May and….it fricken works!! :exploding_head: Turns out this model does sacd too. Now I need some to try. Any suggestions for some good sacd titles would be much appreciated. I’ll be checking out Octave Records tomorrow.

I’m sure this isn’t going to give me what a top dollar transport would do but not a bad way to dip my toe in the cd/sacd pool! Pretty stoked at this find…oh happy dayyyyy

Picked this up for 2 bucks too

What on earth. All that for a toonie? Congratulations on the using up all your luck for the rest of the year.

Lol… I know!! (Had to look up toonie😁) Maybe they thought it was useless since there’s no remote? I have a Harmony somewhere I can bust out. Looks like there’s a remote app too but I need to hook it up to my network and tv to get it all set up. I’m inpatient and just plugged it in, connected it to my system and threw a disk in. Sounds good…just 2 songs in so far😁

Ummm? You got the BPD 93 for 2 freaking dollars!!!???
Holy shit, man. I’ve got no words for your incredible fortune and good luck here.

Okay. So you are on the right path. I use the OPPO BDP 83 and what I can tell you is that SACD’s are going to sound good, but not incredible and that is only due to the DAC that is found inside the player. As you know SACD’s are a Sony/Phillips copyright so you can’t say use your chord DAC and play the SACD layer of the disc, however playing the CD layer off the SACD on a premium DAC is better in my experience, but that is because of the DAC.
The trade offs are really cool and fun to experiment with, but where you get into serious territory and what I think is the best medium of all time is blu ray concert discs, 5.1 mixes in LPCM played on your best DAC. that in my opinion, is the absolute best reference level listening. Forget the hires tidal nonsense or these 384K downloads. Get concert discs or classic albums put onto blu ray audio.

Everything else sounds like a joke compared to it. I’m not kidding and I hope you’ll take my word for it. Once you experience and experiment with blu ray and SACD hybrid discs you’ll laugh at people who go out of their way to say Vinyl is the best medium of all time. :joy:

I look forward to hearing from you, my friend. What a great pick up !! Very special.

So. Off the top of my head. Here are 3 blu ray concert discs that I hope you’ll get and run through your best DAC while exploring the different audio codes offered on these discs.

Peter Gabriel— growing up live.

Metallica— Quebec Magnetic

IQ— Scrape Across the Sky.

This is as real as it gets from a live music perspective.

Once you experience that I’ll tell you some studio releases.

I love the medium and for good reason.

It is really great. Love the CDs in that set. Great live performances and the best live version of Fade to Black I’ve ever heard from them. Classic.

Got a new power conditioner to try

Thanks for the info. I new that about the sacd layer but think I kinda forgot that it’ll be limited by the dac in the player. I ordered a few discs last night from cdJapan and some off Amazon.

Bluerays I currently run through my XboxOne or PlayStation4 which are already connected to my theater 7.1.2 setup run by a Denon receiver. Curious how the Oppo will compare in output quality (video and audio) to Xbox ->Denon.

My audio setup (May, Envy, Folkvangr, etc) is on a separate rack from my theater setup but I’m currently working on combining the two. So I can pass my tv and gaming through my HP rig. Still not entirely convinced I want to do this. Requires all new racks and a lot of mounting/moving, blah blah blah. Not to mention sacrificing the benefits of how isolated my audio-only setup is now.

Anyway, it’s probably not my last stop for cd but the Oppo should hold me over for awhile. I’m glad I waited on the Urd which I had in and out of my cart 3 or 4 times.

Very nice!! Would like to hear your impressions of it. I’ve heard lots of good things about the psm136/156 and considered getting one.

I remember OPPO universal disc players being a highly recommended piece of equipment, best bang for the buck.

I use an oppo as a back up CD player/transport. I found it works better as a straight transport to a DAC than running analog to an amp, at least with my setup. Of course, if you are running SACD you have to use the analog outputs. There might be a way to do it with the HDMI out on the Oppp and the I2S connections on the May but I dont have I2S options myself so I never looked into it.

Not sure if the same setting apply to this oppo as mine but you may need to set SACD to 2 channel instead of multichannel if you are running cans or a 2 channel setup. You have to hook up the oppo to a monitor or TV to see the menus to make any changes.

I imagine it will be a solid $2 player. There used to be all kinds of mods available for Oppo’s but most of them are long gone in terms of being offered.

Wow, nice score indeed! I’ve been looking for the same thing - a CD transport that will also play the DSD layer on SACD, and sadly there are almost no options out there. PS Audio’s SACD transport is WAY too expensive. Congrats!!

p.s. you may find this article interesting/useful.

Thanks for the link. I had read of these adapters that he mentions. Tried using an hdmi I had on hand just to see if I got lucky and it worked between the Oppo and May…no go. Went ahead and ordered one since I have some sacds on the way already. We’ll see :crossed_fingers:

I think you’ll really appreciate the player and the audio codecs it will unlock, which can only add to your audio journey wonderfully. :sunglasses::v:

Let us know how it goes. I’m considering going the Blu-Ray player + converter box route myself.

I used one of these(don’t know if it’s the same one) between my 103D and both the spring 3 and the May and it worked flawlessly. Right out of the box, didn’t even have to go in and try the different configs.
