Oh, weird. What are you loading it on? My 4K TV running in 1080p shows it like this, pretty much the same screen coverage I had before the design was touched:
The scale you showed as the improved one was what v1 of the “new look” was like for me, and it seemed irritatingly narrow, and the “old design” you showed is something I’ve never seen. 
But then I do keep desktop mode always on for everything in my mobile browsers, and browse in landscape orientation 99% of the time.

Didn’t think it was you personally.
Perhaps the culprit er, aficionado of early 2000s “international” design like I had to fire er remove from the team in my former work would like to identify themselves and explain their mistakes reasoning.
I am new kid on the block but the old design is my preference!
