Quick Impressions - PortaPro Wireless
I’m listening to Taylor Swift on Tidal Masters, MQA using my Chuwi Hi9 Pro Android 8 Tablet. The sound is classic Porta Pro, if not quite up to the wired version, it’s very very good. Also listened to some Led Zeppelin, and some Miles Davis, all very competently handled.
I’ve had the Wireless now for a few days, and have not done extensive listening, nor have I put on YAXI pads - I’m going to let my grand-newphew pick a set, if he wants the wireless Koss. (I also have a standard Koss wired set, he’ll have to make an 11 year old decision).
The Wireless ships with a round headphone case and a headphone bag as your choice of how to carry it. There is a charging port, and some minimal instructions written in fashionable or 6 point type. There is a wire to charge but no charger. It does not appear that the charger may be used as a wired USB, these headphones are wireless only. They have a simple volume plus center button interface to do everything, and a red/blue flashing LED indicator.
When I listened using my iPhone to TIDAL, they headphones did not sound quite as clear as they do now. Going over the manual very carefully with the aid of some magnification, I found a reference to AptX in the fine print’s fine print. Nowhere does it say that the headphones support AptX, but AAC or other codecs are not mentioned at all. That’s why I pulled out the Android tablet to give it a try.
I strongly suspect that the variability of reviews on the Koss Wireless PortaPro sound is a reflection of the Bluetooth protocol. The headphones support Bluetooth 4.2. With AptX, the sound is just fine. Without it - paired with a mobile iOS device, there is a noticeable degradation of sound. Worse soundstage, slightly muddy reproduction overall. Comparing to wired, on the same tracks, Wired was better. Very little difference compared to wired when using Android or other AptX connection.
I haven’t had a chance yet to photo the equipment, or take a gratuitous pic of 3 Koss phones, possibly with one wrapped around an 11 year old head, sporting his color choice of Yaxis.
But yes, these are clearly PortaPros. And adequately powered with the battery. I can turn them up louder than I want them to be. Vocals are very clear, and the production of Taylor Swift’s “Lover” album is excellent. Cymbals are cymbally, “I Think He Knows” is just as piquant as it should be. Drums and bass line have good slam.
If you have AptX, these headphones rock, especially for the price. If not - stick to the wired.

I have a photo now to go with this post.
Nice!
Those damn Apple fanboys… ruining everything.
I guess licensing of AAC would break the target price range. I don’t know how many units Koss sells, particularly of the wireless models. I think it would be smart to support AAC, especially since new apple devices don’t really have a place to plug in headphones.
Yep it supports a maximum of AptX, otherwise it’ll default to SBC. As far as I know the drivers are totally identical to a regular wired Porta Pro. $80 is too steep, and the permanently blinking blue light is weird. On top of that you probably noticed there’s some noise floor to it. It is convenient though and battery life is very good…
Noise floor didn’t bother me. I take a bit for granted with wireless. My other wireless phones are worse, and more expensive. Sennheiser MM450x is what I think I recall as the model number. Those also offer wired and noise cancellation. I don’t like the inherent sound of cancellation.
I’m generally not a big fan of wireless, but I could see using these if my phone were AptX friendly.
The BTR3 I got for my wired model seems like it may be a better pick from a sound perspective. Then again, I don’t know how much it matters depending on your use case. I probably wouldn’t notice much of a difference while walking my dog.
Great impressions.
thank you for the impressions on the BT version David!
You had me with Taylor Swift(reminder to me about listening to “I think he knows”)
The rest was like always a fun and informative read.
Did not know about the bag and case. This makes the price fair.
I appreciate you mentioning the codec problem with different sources. Many reviewers won´t inform us about what they use. In our home is a Apple Fanlady… don´t need to say more
I´m with @ProfFalkin and would prefer myself, a dedicated BT dongle(xDSD, ES100 or BTR3, etc)
for podcasts, netflix or for music on the go with the dog out, cause they already are in use.
For the mainstream consumer, the BT version might be more practical.
I´m paranoid about braking the thin hf cables, with all the Koss versions.
So pay less for the wired version and get another pair… is my way.
please finish this “review” with the pictures
Thank you for your kind words. I figure listening to Taylor Swift is a task important in the prime demographic for these Koss headphones. Koss seems to be packaging bag and case with their Special Editions also. The vinyl/pleather bag was the only carrier with my Apple-Friendly wired model.
I don’t know what will be in the Drop versions, or what’s in the standard, non-Special Edition packaging.
All of this , and the big kicker for me on skipping it was the fact you don’t get a limited lifetime warranty with the bluetooth model only 1 year. Many of the reviews I read said the units stopped connecting right after the 1 year mark. BTR3 plus Porta Pros is a winning combo. I still have to put on my YAXI pads! Going to do that this weekend.
I believe you can´t go wrong with your wise choice
I definitely think it’s more of a convenient set up for on the go with the Porta pro BT model.
What headphones did he wear?
Who, me? Porta Pros. We were talking about the wireless version vs wired.
not you…the dog
(obviously you each have your own headphones while walking)
He is more of a Skullcandy iem doggy. Listens to German Techno. It’s really hard to find over ear headphones that fits him.
I thought your dog looked familiar!!
That was… Interesting.
