Koss Porta Pro-Unofficial Thread

The ESP is budget for e-stats.

Still, I understand they do sound good. I’ve had less than 5 minutes of head time with them, so I’m not qualified to confirm or deny that.

I’m on my 2nd pair of Porta Pros (completely wore out the 1st doing my daily 5 mile walk for years). Just put Yaxi pads on PP #2, the all-black ones from Drop.

My only reason for putting the Yaxi pads on was to increase the diameter & thickness of the pads so they completely cover my ears–useful in the cold weather of mid-state New York. Before this I’d have to move to earbuds + knit hat on colder/windy days.

It never occurred to me that the Yaxi pads might change the sound. I only rarely listen to music on my PPs…usually it’s podcasts or audio books. Next time I listen to tunes I’ll check for sonic benefits.

BTW, I have 2 other pairs of cheap on-ear HPs from KOSS (Sporta Pro & KPH301s). The Sporta Pro is insanely bassy. I just can’t use them. The 301s are also bassy, but more tolerable. They’re quite comfortable & I use them on my laptop when I’m too lazy to fire up the DAC & amp to hear full-size headphones.

Guess I’m a Koss fanboy…

The SportaPro and Portapro and KSC35 are all the same driver, just different ways of wearing it.

The sportapro headband design isnt comfortable at all for me. :frowning:

My probably 12th iteration of PortaPros are out for delivery!

If I’m not mistaken, all the 60 ohm Kosses are technically the same driver, but it’s just whether they’re titanium coated or not that affects their character

Yea, the are, except the Ti, but iirc the sportapro, portapro and 35 are the same exact configuration including the driver housing.

I’ll be ordering mine as soon as I return from vacations , they are like a must to have now for me and with the multicolor pads.

I just ordered Yaxi pads a few days ago. Going to see how they change both the Porta Pro and KSC. Personally not a huge fan of the Porta Pro, too dark for my tastes. I am hoping the Yaxi pads fix that to some degree.

They do bring out the mids and highs a bit. The Porta Pros will always be warm, however.

The KDE250 is back on DROP at the moment
Not sure about the sound
The Porta Pro is still not to beat for price/sound and easy swappable Pads (to Yaxi)
The others won’t let you change pads as easy

I am at the gym right now rocking my Porta Pros crushing a heavy leg workout :muscle::leg:, honestly my favorite on the go gym headphone now paired up with the BTR3 when I don’t want to hold my phone :iphone: and it’s :musical_score::musical_score::musical_score::musical_score: for my :ear::ear:

I was seriously considering the BTR3, then I saw the BTR5 and now it’s paralysis by analysis.

I know either will drive it better than my Google USB-C dongle. The BTR5 has Bluetooth 5, more features, etc… But it’s just driving Porta Pros, so… Worth the extra $$$? Paralysis.

In case you missed it, I did a review of them when I got my pair.

I thought that I read all reviews on the forum in the last months. How could I miss this one?!

Thank you very much for it! What a wonderful read!

I would now decide between Earstudio ES100 and the BTR5
We own BTR3 and ES100. BTR3 is a tad warmer.
From what I read the BTR5 is an upgrade over the Earstudio.
All are really worth it for Bluetooth usage
The ES100 even drives my DT1990 250 Ohm with enough authority and LDAC Codec with Android 9 and newer is good enough for on the go listening.
Still prefer my ifi xDSD wired but also with APTX BT Codec
The main selling point of all the 3 units, is the clip to attach the dongle to your shirt.
OR:
Wrap the cable of your IEM or headphones once around your neck and clip the dongle to the cable at the height of the splitter. So there is no weight pushing the thing down and nothing gets in the way- it’s like wearing ā€œtrue wirelessā€ and you can reach the dongle for volume adjustments, play/pause or skip tracks
You even get a mic for phone calls, etc
Transfer most of your headphones and IEMs into a handsfree one
I got for my 150 Ohm Sennheisers, my Elegia and the DT1990 shorter cables with 1.2m lenght, to have less to wrap around. First I used the DT 770 Pro with the 3m long cable with the BTR3 for months and it worked somehow.

Forgive my ignorance, what is a BTR3?

They are Bluetooth receivers / portable amps.
