OFF-TOPIC: Photography Showcase/Show-off

Crashes often occur near objects of interest – trees, cliffs, buildings, etc. That’s where DJI’s avoidance systems shine.

Neither. Drones are early phase, costly, bleeding edge technology with near instant obsolescence. I want decent image quality and a good chance of survival/vendor support.

There are interesting and innovative Parrot products, but neither Parrot nor Autel has the overall integration and sophistication of DJI.

No offense intended.

See my rather lengthy post on my drone use in the “Off Topic” thread. Again, no offense intended. DJI has a massive market share for good reason. DJI dominates the prosumer and low-end pro market for good reason.

this is no test.
They write down specs
Pros and Cons- with false Information

" Digital zoom cuts into 4K quality" for example
Here you can choose in the menue (they never looked at the menue) If you want a lossy zoom or not.

No offense but I get angry over such “tests” this is why lots of magazines loose abos.

My buddy worked at “xxx” they are similar and it got weird. Not only free stuff. They (Leading companys)pressure magazines with adverts budgets. …
for this kind of comparisons - no lies, but not all details correctly subscribed. If someone asks - you made a mistake or overlooked it.
Sheets with comparisons missing unique selling points from newcomer companys.

So he searched for another job.
He was at a drone company - selling the big 12 rotors offshore 30 tsd dollar big toys
Microsoft bought the company and invested
Now they develop crazy stuff.
He is presenting the secret future units world wide.
Programms choreos for big events like on the olympics where hundreds of this little suckers build 3D Logos and what not…

So I am since years involved in the software and hardware market, made pictures for the catalog. …

Dyi’s market share is obvious

Edit: thank you for the link. I read it a few days ago. Good description for people thinking about getting in

The PC mag article is just a consumer publication, but its ratings are not too different from specialist sources. I very nearly bought a new drone a few months back and researched many products.

I have no trust in DJI’s IT security either, and would happily buy a non-spy brand if possible.

A trio of OOC shots (from a little Sony RX100 MK VII and/or an iPhone XS). Just resized/cropped for posting purposes. All shot in auto-mode:

Thousands still to cull/process …

I shoot on a Sony A7III, before that I shot on a Canon 60D. Mostly outdoor/landscape stuff but also some street photography. I edit in Lightroom. More of my work at www.ethan-gordon.com

You guys see the new Mavic Mini announcement?

This might be the one for me to try this whole drone thing out on

yeahh get it!

it´s so much fun but don´t harm anyone

nearly lost mine last weekend in the alps over a water reservoir - it lost connection in the fog over 1km away and 150 meters high… automatic return to home worked perfect this time for a 29m high bridge with 30m minimum height dialed in the app
tip: never start a flight under a bridge

Good specs. I’m on the DJI mailing list and received spam a while back. Great flight time for the size. My concern is wind resistance, as this is related to mass. The camera can likely stabilize images, but it may be tougher to fly near objects or recover from errors.

yes 1 step over toy - character… but for the budget and the small footprint… a no brainer
dyi will sell tons of it

for the standard form factor + controller + batteries + power bank + nd-filters-set…you need a bag of some sort

with this small thing you can go out with the controller in one pocket of your jacket and the drone in the other

So what’s 2 steps over toy? I’ve been given toys and did not like it. Hard to fly, short range and poor quality. I figure the more years (decades) I hold off, the cheaper by orders of magnitude it will be.

no this will be fine
it maybe has a toy Charakter, but is ok.

others may be larger and have more features

The 30 minutes flight time is quite good
larger drones reach around 22-26 minutes
and you want to land with at around 15% battery load left

not every one needs 4k, zoom, up-tiltung Kameras, HDR, bigger sensors, more megapixels and far more than illegal range or obsticle avoidance

because you asked, I can name a few
mine is the french “Parrot Anafi”

dji has the here named Mavic Mini, Mavic Air, Pro, Phantom 4Pro v2.0… Inspire series

all have their drawbacks

with dji products you have the “no flight zones” fixed in the app

with Parrot you have no obsticle avoidance
and so on…

Within the DJI family

  • One step over toy - this or the older Spark
  • Two steps (hobbyist and prosumer) - Mavic Air or old Mavic Pro
  • Three steps (prosumer and limited pro) - Mavic 2 family (and the camera options of the older Phantom series)
  • Pro (everyday entry level) - Inspire 2
  • Pro (niche or serious) - Mavic Enterprise dual camera/thermal; Matrice

The price point is a big hint, roughly: <$500 is consumer-oriented impulse buy, <$1,000, <$2,000, $2K+

A few comments about pro models:

  • They can have fewer features than prosumer models (i.e., users are experts and sometimes fly as a two person pilot & photographer team)
  • They are heavy and may have fairly short flight times
  • They often have 6+ props for greater stability, and durability with motor failures
  • They can carry a full sized DSLR or a big pro video lens
  • Users piece together elements from different vendors/configure for specific uses
