Your take on it makes more sense. I was just looking for a head-slap excuse to spend more money!
I think I have mentioned this before, but here it goes again…
Spoiler alert: if you’re purchasing along with a module, stop reading here. It does not apply to you.
However, if you – please note the conditionals:
- prefer to purchase separates;
- praise for all acessible buttons/switches having a valid function in the product.
These guys below may not be for you. Or, they may be – as long as you let your OCD in the background. Big fight for some.
I could blind buy any of the above. Not with a useless switch in the front of the unit if I’m not purchasing a module though.
I really hope they make this custom in the future.
“You can have any color as long as it’s black.” – remember that quote?
Cheers.
Second day on the Asgard 3… coming from the THX 789 I can finally understand when people say source gear does indeed make a difference. I was honestly shocked by how evident it was because I don’t think I have the critical listening skills that most audiophiles have. I was expecting minor differences, having to listen really carefully to hear the differences.
The Asgard 3 is definitely more musical and I understand even more when people say the 789 is very clinical. Everything has more body/weight in the Asgard.
789 bass sounds more punchy with faster decay. Sounds very clean.
Asgard definitely sounds warmer (in sound and feel… I can’t imagine having the Asgard 2 with pure Class A in my room… it’s hot enough!)
Now I don’t know if I still want to keep my 789 or not. They both have their places… I like them both. However, if I had to keep one it would probably be the Asgard because it’s much more easy to listen to for a long period of time… with the 789 the punchiness fatigued me after awhile.
Being able to hear the difference changes everything…
Now the only thing that’s left is trying out different DACs. I have the modius coming in tomorrow so I can’t wait to see how that compares with the Modi 3. Not sure if I’ll be able to pick out the differences, but I also said the same about 789 > Asgard… so who knows.
Spoiler alert: it’s absolutely incredible. Really solid buy. I’d say for the money, but it’s honestly the best audio experience I’ve ever had at home pairing the Modius with the Lyr 3. I imagined a layer of cement was forming between my chair and I. Just wanted to sit there and never leave. The soundstage, layering, body, and depth in general struck me by surprise. I straight up laughed smiling ear to ear because of how it changed listening to music for me.
I think that the biggest lesson I’ve learnt from my time on the forum is the importance of source gear and the to some extent the synergy it brings. Whilst the Headphones/Iems are of great importance it’s not the be all and end all.
Modius is getting very good reviews on SBAF … particularly from the balanced outs. Hopefully the new form factor of Modius will lead to a matching amp with balanced ins.
Wow!!
Wouldnt that be really neat!!

NOTE: Patience Obi-Wan!!
Something kind of like the Jotunheim?
Oh, wait…
My lips are sealed!!
:>)
Cool meetup session and your impressions are helpful. My overall preference probably lies somewhere between the neutrality of the SW51+ and warmth of the ZTD Jr.
Would someone please compare the current version of the Jotunheim with the sound of the Lyr 3?
I have both and use both alot…
I would appreciate it a lot if could share how the experiences contrast.
Well…they both are great amps… both have tons of power and drive most anything.
Both are built very well, solid.
Of course the Jot has balanced capability.
The newer Lyr3 has a few nice enhancements…new tech etc.
Soundwise, both are quiet, they IMO are similar in sound profile…so I am at a lost at a really detailed explanation. Both work so dang well its hard for me to pick one over the other.
I do find the Jot is just a tad warmer than the Lyr 3, and the Lyr 3 is just a tad more open. So with trebly cans like Beyer T1s or Grados the jot would probably be a better fit to help tone down the highs just a tad.
Where the Lyr3 works very well with dynamic cans like the Clears and even with the HEDDS I just got.
The LYR 3 of couse is a tube hybrid, and only SE in and outs…this may be of a concern, so the Jot may better suit your connectivity.
I would find it hard to part with either one…
If you want to take advantage of a balanced dac, which I do, then the Jot would be a great choice with a fully balanced cable you also get more power and this may be a factor. I use both and gain both work very well.
I really dont find that much diffference overall all except the slight warmness with the Jot. You would think that it would be the other way around.
If I think of anything more I will let you know…
Alex
Thank you for the write up!! I find your observations on the Jotunheim interesting considering the Lyr 3 was definitely a warmer sounding amp than the Asgard 3. Will possibly be on the lookout for the amp if I’m willing to buy balanced cables for my headphones.
Yes, great impressions @lost33 (Alex).
Got my BF2 back from tech support. YAY!
Got it about a week back and Schiit tech support was amazing.
IMO they are the Best!!
Great group of guys and gals for sure!
So how does it work now ??
Perfecto! All back to normal
I currently have the Jot with the multibit DAC and I was wondering if the Bifrost sounded any different to that dac. Do you have the multibit Dac in your Jot? If so, how’s it compare to the bifrost?
