What headphones do you have in your collection and why?

The high praise for the Ori and me beeing the closed back guy… you guys kill me

One very important thing about the Ori, is that it needs a powerful and clean sounding amp to shine. Lots like to use a good solid state, and I love them with my Liquid Platinum. I just wanted to add that, incase someone is looking to buy a set.

Thank you Wesley.
At the moment there is a stack with RME ADI 2 DAC fs (4493) > THX AAA 789

plans for a Tube are Feliks Audio Echo or BC + Speedball for the next months, while Lyr 3 is still in the race

The THX gets out of the way of the SPL Phonitor XE at the end of 2020

So this would be powerful and clean enough- I hope?
The Feliks might be not the most powerful option. It’s in my budget and not as dark from what I read.

added today the Sennheiser HD6xx to my other headphondes

the Sennheiser HD 660s got finally sold for a to low price

as I already wrote in my comment linked, the 660s never really catched me and I wanted my HD 600 back.

the plan to add a tube amp grew on me and I was not sure which (600/650) to buy for use with the tube until I decide which ZMF (Aeolus/Auteur/Edit: Ori) to get.
As my current THX Amp is a bit unvorgiving I went with the 6xx for now.

6XX is still one of my favorite headphones! It sounds better and better after adding the LYR/Bifrost

I did enjoy it balanced out of the xDSD today and clamp was ok for over 4 hours with some short brakes

Sadly I have not the possibilty to use a open back this and tomorrow evening

For sure it was no mistake is what I can already say

Yeah the clamp force is a bit much at first, I left it on one of my headphone stands day and night when not using it to stretch it out when I first got them. For the money the 6XX is incredible, and honestly the sound is above what they cost when you start to add better amps to them.

I could see either of those ss amps doing a good job. However, the Ori is a 50 ohm planar, so if you go the tube route, I suggest a hybrid.

could be I was a touch underwhelmed today to be honest
maybe the xDSD + Elegia combo is burnt in my cortex
My stack at home will kick more butt
and I am used to brighter hf with 1990s and Elegia
I give my brain some burn in

this is why the Lyr 3 is back in the game
Would you see another sub 500 hybrid as better suited?

I don’t think the 6XX sounded the best from the XDSD combo, it actually performs with more power and at the end of the day the XDSD sounds really good For most cans but I think for a high impedance headphoneS like the 6XX to shine you need to give it a bit more.

I believe you are right about the ifi/6xx pairing
and I have boomarked this: Hiby R5

More power is certainly a good idea

With my stationary stack sound is also a bit different(another pairing)
and burn in can open the 6xx a touch- who knows

I actually had the Lyr 3, and it was decent with the Ori, but it just seemed to smooth things over a bit to much. I would keep an eye out for a used Liquid Platinum, and I have seen them going for around $450 - $500. The Liquid Platinum, takes the Ori to another level.

that is something I can have a look on in the used markets- in Germany it’s not as common

Thank you Wesley!

Exactly right. The xDSD is adequate, but I prefer to go line out from the xDSD’s DAC to the Lyr3 to get the most out of the HD-6XX

Thank you David,

you helped me chill a bit. As I knew you use the xDSD and do enjoy your 6xx

I could add the ifi xCAN in future, should I need to drive something on the go which needs more power - it really made me curious to give it a try now. My reasonable part says I won´t need it, cause I drive the Elegia or IEMs on the go. The other part screams POWER - do it! :joy: this stack will look so cool with even more fingerprints everywhere! it has these nice xBass+ 2 options with presence, bass or both

I can say, today the 6xx out of the xDSD sounds better than yesterday. - maybe in a better mood cause it is friday. Could not find sleep yesterday, cause was worried, I´m not audiophile enough for the Senns or so
Added the xBASS+ and the 3D+ on the ifi with some songs and it helps with quite a few songs! especially the 3d+ with brightening things up a touch - what I usually don´t need with my other headphoens and IEMs.
I cancelled gym this evening(set the priorities right) and will give the 6xx a listen for two hours on my home stack before we go out, doing this socialising stuff

Back home after work and a big walk with the dog.

6xx with the RME ADI 2 DAC > THX AAA 789 > balanced
now we’re talking

Took a while to realise with A/B out of the xDSD

The stack gave the 6xx some air to breathe
Midrange is now way better like I remember the 600s
They were used 2 years out of the hf out of a 7.1 reciever- so no surprise

Low end is totally fine- don’t need more
Did not play with EQ yet - maybe give the upper register a slight shove

Have to go out now- super happy mode activated - drama for nothing mode off

They get even better with some tube love. I liked them with my THX/SU8 combo but like them even more with the LYR/Bifrost

give me some side photo jobs and there will be a order out like while shooting
Season starts end of march so maybe april mid april

For now I am cool with the 6xx over the 600s decision with my current stack
