I was listening to these two, very different, interpretations of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and they are both incredibles !!! I’m familiar with Tomita’s work, but I haven’t listen to the ELP in years.
Very familiar with both. And with this - (not the same pressing I have but still the same label and recording)
Heilung…for that nostalgic European ancestral, tribal, in the woods feel:
Grab your best (imaging/bass extension) gear, and give a listen to the 11min wonder that Darkside’s “Golden Arrow”.
Speaking of imaging, this came up on shuffle just now. Very nice.
I’ve been listening to King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard a lot lately. It’s kind of weird psychedelic stuff. One of my favorite albums of theirs is available for free here and here.
I love that album! I think I might get to see them live next month.
Awesome man, those are two of my favorites too ! Will see them live on the 26th of this month !
The China Concerts (1981) is IMO the best Jean Michel Jarre concert officially recorded album. Very limited because only had 3 albums at that time, but impressive concert.
Visually nothing compete with La Defense (1990), but never was officially release.
Listening more to SANTANA’s latest, Africa Speaks on Tidal. Gorgeous album, beautifully recorded. I’d like to hear what some of you with the SRS1a headphones think of it.
Out and about, but I’ll check it out when I get home this afternoon! Wife and toddler allowing…
Lol
Well, I tried it(Santana Africa Speaks) on both the 16/44.1 and the 24/96 mastered and the 24/96 wins out on the SR1A for sure, it honestly wasn’t that fun listening at 16/44.1, it wasn’t bad per se…just was not as resolving as the 24/96…it is odd saying I can hear the difference lol… but with the SR1A it becomes very apparent between the two.
That being said, there is a lot going on in these tracks especially in the highs, and it can get a bit cluttered with details and imaging and slightly confusing listening to the album as there is a lot going on all at once. With the SR1A it becomes very “noisy” as they are all clear and precise, the tracks feel messy, and at times incoherent and can get piercing when the guitar riffs kick in ouch. I don’t think this is a problem with other headphones though… the SR1A just highlights too much and for me at least with this album it gets too “Wall of noise” for me to enjoy it on the SR1A.
Switched to some 24/96 Bob Marley, and instantly was back where I want to be…
I am now on some Madonna “Batuka” which has a similar feel to the Santana album, but it is more appealing and coherent to my ears. 24/88.2 version
“Belong” by Slender bodies 16/44.1 excellent! Head bobbing and sipping some rum…
You know… I should probably start writing up my impression piece on the Meze Empyreans…but…the SR1A has me now… lovely…
Guilty pleasure track time “Eblouie par la nuit” by Zaz I don’t know what she is singing but it just grabs me, been listening to this track for a couple years now
Ok went back to Santana Africa Speaks on a different set of cans (my new Vokyl Erupts) and I like the album better… still gets a lil much at times… but as a single session listen it is pretty entertaining, still a little too piercing for my preference, but that is just me…seriously sounds great with the Vokyl Erupts…these things are really growing on me…
Back to listening to Santana, but moved to my Cayin N6ii and the Vokyl Erupts…this is excellent now, no piercing, no wall of noise…I’m digging this album now, hmm maybe need to try it with the Aeolus or Verite next…
This is definitely where owning different cans with different sound signatures is beneficial. I find my U18t’s very detailed and with great clarity and resolution, with a little EQ to my tastes. It’s nice to change sometimes to my HD650’s for a smoother sound. I know it’s not the same as with you especially owning the SR1A but I can see where you’re coming from. Enjoy.
Thumbs up on the Marley.
Thanks for your impressions. I heard Santana live about a year before this came out - he wasn’t performing this material. He’s definitely changed up his band some. I was listening on the Grado RS1e/DFCobalt chain. Super sound stage, everything quite detailed and resolved. Yes, there is a bit more clutter on the high end than is usual with Santana - I think it’s the mix of African instruments and percussion.
Speaking of percussion, I need to listen to this on my home setup (I was away), and check it on both the HiFiman HE-560 and the Senn HD-6xx. When I saw Santana, there were two conga-type percussionists and one traditional set. Very intense, but also very classic Santana Afro-Latin fusion and this album spins very hard to the African as interpreted by Latin. I miss big albums with liner notes. The RS1e is not thin on bass, but it doesn’t slam like a bass-head headphone. Both the other combos, particularly when paired with the Schiit Lyr 3 will reveal if there’s anything I’m not hearing at the bottom with my travel rig.
Grew up on the Bob! My Dad was a huge fan of him and reggae.
The SR1A showed its teeth on that album for me. It was too detailed with the snares, percussions and especially the high electric guitar riffs were especially piercing on the SR1A, at least for me…but I’m also one who will hear electronics whine and go nuts trying to locate and remove it lol. Think dog whistle, my wife doesn’t hear it but it drives me nuts when, say a usb charger has coil whine, or for instance the noise coming off LEDs.
Anyhow, the Santana album is rather enjoyable on the Erupts, and Empyrean =)
Here are a few… Enjoy!
Currently listening to Buena Vista Social Club - Buena Vista Social Club from @prfallon69’s first post. Haven’t heard them in a long time! Other albums from today:
Vivaldi: Concertos for the Emperor
Depeche Mode - Violator
The Flaming Lips - King’s Mouth: Music And Songs
The Alan Parsons Project - Eye in the Sky
The Alan Parsons Project - Tales of Mystery and Imagination
Modest Mouse - Strangers to Ourselves
Buena Vista Social Club is a favorite. If I try to play it at work, my Admin, who was born in Cuba and came to the US when she was 16, giggles and says I’m playing her grandparents’ music.
I’ll probably say something similar. It was a well done effort from artist from outside Cuba to put that music and those musicians right when they deserved!! Better late than never!!! Thanks Ry Cooder , Wim Wenders and others for the vision and hard work.
Feels good when you know people still like them.
Truly good music, or anything really, is timeless and like that, there will always be people keeping it culturally alive.
