This week, I’ve been continuing my re-acquaintance with mostly pre-Baroque music. Mostly Renaissance Period (approx. 1400-1600), and a lot of William Byrd. Been using ROON, TIDAL, and an excellent website, www.mfiles.co.uk, which covers an astonishing range of material.

I find I like Byrd’s range of compositions. In this time of a worldwide epidemic, A few albums worth of listening to music from 400-700 years ago reminds me that this too shall pass, and that beautiful things came from a time where life was often short and brutal.

When the Black Death hit London in 1664, and most of Europe in 1347-52, there was no hunkering down, no ground beef in the deep freeze, the doctors would bleed you. On the bright side, there was also no shortage of toilet paper. Not that I’m looking for music of the plague years - far from it. But people were taking joy in faith, good weather, music, beer, and sex.

I like Byrd’s “Consorts” an example here: https://tidal.com/browse/track/467469
There is so much he’s done - military

Beyond Byrd, I’ve listened to John Dowland, and found an interesting group called “Fretwork” that do a lot of old music, but are not above Elvis Costello.

Use this precious time we’ve been granted wisely, as we’re only allotted a finite amount of time on this magnificent journey.

Be well.

So, Robert, I graduated from high school in the year that the first of those albums was released. Interesting reminder…

Been listening to a bit of Chris Cornell this past week.

That guy really could sing. He really conveyed emotion, and at times you could feel the torment resonate through you. Sad and beautiful at the same time, but ultimately tragic.

I have been listening to this compilation album the past few weeks on and off. Not very Audiophile or high brow. But oh so good…

Enjoy.
