Nothing until the adapter gets here, seems they sent it via paddleboat across the pacific ETA September…
Anyway, i have an EC Studio B, Decware Taboo MK4, Decware 341.5 and Decware CSP2 all of which i look forward to sampling this rectifier w/ at some point in time…many moons from now it seems😢
The adapters I order from China via eBay normally get here within a couple weeks. Waiting for a bundle of adapters from a custom builder and it was shipped about a month ago so I feel your pain.
How do you like your Studio B? I’ve got one on order that should be arriving in a couple of weeks…
My Studio B has been here a bit over a week but I have not been able to enjoy it yet. Waiting on one small part from EC before I can use it, there was a small delay due to pandemic supply issues. Very much looking forward to being able to use it soon.
How frustrating to be able to look at it but not be able to listen to it! I hope Craig gets it to you really soon, and that the part is back in when he’s making mine! All the best, and have a great weekend, Nick! Larry.
@Lars which 300B tubes are you preparing to use on yours? I have some Electro Harmonix and Western Electrics.
Hi Nick! I discussed this with Craig a few times, and he said that for the money (about $380/pair), he’s likes the sound of the Genelex Gold Lions, and he said he usually buys his tubes from The Tube Store, so I did just that. I was originally going to get them from Brent Jessie, but the same tube was a good bit more expensive from him, though other tubes he had were the same price as The Tube Store. He said that’s because Genelex is not one of his suppliers and has to get them from another more expensive source. So they’re sitting here waiting patiently for the Studio B to sit into!
I have Genelex Gold Lion 300B’s, and found them to be incredibly good value. I even preferred them to the much more expensive EML 300B’s. I only barely prefer Takatsuki 300B’s to the Genelex Gold Lions, and those are ~5x the cost. Good choice. For context, this is in a Woo WA5-LE.
The only issue i have had with my own Genelex tubes is the very long break in time before they settle in and give me consistency in their sound. 150-200hrs or so worth of burn in has been my personal experience. Otherwise, yep very happy with them for the price.
Thanks, Andris, and I’m glad to hear you say that! Actually, what both Craig from Eddie Current and Brent Jessie said for their first choice of great value for money is the JJ 300B’s, but everybody seemed to be out of them, so the Gold Lions were my second choice, but I’ve read a lot of people on forums say good things about them, too.
Maybe next year I’ll upgrade to $20K Westinghouse ones!
Cheers!! Larry.
Good to hear about the JJ and the Gold Lions. I too have a Studio B incoming and was looking for some 300B tubes for it. Will give these 2 tubes a look to try and grab them.
Thanks for telling me that, Nick; is it just a matter of leaving them on, or do they need to have a signal go through them?
I’m used to really long break-in times of around 200 hours for headphones, so I can deal with that.
I’m really excited to hear the Chord Dave and M-Scaler I just recently bought play through the Studio B - right now I use a Quicksilver Tube Headphone amp, which for a little under $1000 and made in the US by one amp maker, is a SUPERB value and could not possibly be simpler to use, literally (has sockets for a DAC, volume control, and on/off switch, and that’s it), but I’m sure EC will put me someplace else altogether…. Cheers!! Larry…
Enjoy your QS and what it does, from all i have heard it is an awesome piece. I honestly am not sure which the “correct” method is, i have done both at times to help tubes along that have some popping or hiss or whatever little weirdness some have. Its doesn’t always work and some tubes just sound like crap ir don’t synergize well and those i simply don’t use in the same application agin.
Thanks, Nick! Yes, considering how good it sounds, it’s very surprising it costs under $1000….
Those are really good tubes
So far, really liking it with the Nautilus. I’ve been avoiding the 12ax7 because of the gain but it sounds really good and the volume window isn’t bad at all. Plus i put the matrix in pre mode to fine tune the volume keeping between -10 and 0 db. Personally, i really like it set up this way.
For my future Donald North Audio Stellaris. Next level packaging that involved triple boxing and loads of packing materials. This tube is massive, U52 and a RCA 5U4G pictured along with for scale.
