It will be great to know your thoughts on this outside show conditions. Also how the SS performs with “normal” headphones.

Atrium Closed in Olivewood

First impressions
All the fuss about the bass is true

Congrats, that’s a beautiful headphone. I love the olive wood.

I’ll be interested to find out if you prefer the stock lambskin pads (most bass) or the suede pads (less bass than lambskin, but still more than the average headphone). I’m in the suede camp myself, but there are times that letting loose with a full bass experience is also lots of fun.

I’m thinking I might enjoy the lambskin more because my system is a bit lean right now.
Just one more dynamic to introduce to the system!

I feel like Caldera’s superpower is its bass, too, though I haven’t had opportunity yet to audition AC. I wonder how their superpower-in-common compares?

Caldera is more resolving no doubt, but I really enjoy my Atrium Open, which is not a slouch in the bass department either. AO is a fun contrast to Utopia 2020 imo, and has great synergy with a good, resolving class A amp (Burson Soloist GT in my case).

If you don’t have an Atrium I bet you’d enjoy it, especially with your setup! :+1:

I’ve heard Atrium, and while it is no doubt a seriously impressive headphone I didn’t find that it offered anything materially better vs Utopia for my particular use case. The only thing I am lacking (again, for MY particular use case) with Utopia is a headphone that digs really deep into the sub-bass and can capture the sharp transients of techno/electronic music. In my time with Caldera I found that it does that remarkably well, though I wasn’t entirely convinced that it wasn’t just slightly TOO relaxed in the treble for me. I did come away believing that Caldera has the best bass of any headphone I’ve ever heard, though, which is why the hype for AC’s bass has me intrigued.

Anyway, until I find the perfect basshead over-ear for me I have Legend EVO to fill that gap.

Yeah I was thinking AC for you if you got one. I just find the beautiful mids and the more “relaxed” sound of the bio-cellulose driver an enjoyable contrast with Utopia…

Killing it, John! Man? That has to be your best closed back and possibly the best one yet? Hope you are in sonic heaven. Congrats my friend.

Obviously they’re brand new, so they need to break in a bit, but since I have both the Caldera’s and the ACs I’d offer this up.
The Caldera’s have great bass extension but are not as bass forward as these are. The ACs are more like a Hi-Rez Eikon.
If you think the Caldera’s are too relaxed, these probably aren’t the cans for you, because they lean into that space even more.
Again, these are first impressions, we’ll see where they go once they have a few hours on them

Came crawling back to the Elegia after selling my last pair a year or so ago.

They’re $300 at Adorama now, which is a great deal imo.
Was interesting going back to them after using my HD6XX for a while. The midrange took a bit to get used to, but after some head burn-in I’m really enjoying them again.

Thanks, I appreciate the first impression!

I thought the Dekoni Lambskins were a definite upgrade for the Elegia.

Nice! What body are you going to mount it on? I’m a Nikon Z9 user, but was thinking about getting an R7 to keep in the desk at work.

It will live on my R5. I sold the 1DxIII. Waiting for the R5 II or R1 (hopefully next year). The R5 is such a good body. 45MP, great low light, IBIS, 8k video, superb AF, and weather sealed. It’s kind of like a mini pro body.

I heard the Z9 is really good too. I bet you are enjoying it!
