Now we’re getting somewhere
Aaaand I’m speechless again. Even on the first listen, without much warming up or burning in, this is just ridiculous. How an amp can turn my train of thoughts into a void of nothingness, I have no clue. It’ll probably take a couple of weeks before I can come up with the right words to describe its sound, but yeah this is something else. Although I’ve already auditioned it 7 weeks ago and loved it right there and then, it feels like hearing it for the first time all over again.
This is the final piece of the puzzle for me. Bifrost 2 > Euforia > Empyrean, that’s what concludes this chapter in my journey. My savings account for recreational purchases will go in hibernation now, but a ZMF headphone is still on my radar for a future purchase. Can’t wait to hear how the Auteur or Verite will sound with this amp. I’m sure it’ll be wonderful.
THAT is one dope amp. I have yet to hear a Feliks myself, but I like how they look and they have plenty of praises. As all good amps, not all like them, so good you had the opportunity to try it out.
Congrats
Yeah for such an amount of money, I wouldn’t dare blind-purchasing any amp, no matter how much praise they’re getting.
Among the different amps I’ve auditioned along the way, this one really stood out to me as an exceptionally impressive sounding tube amp with the Empyrean, really kicks some life and energy into the Empyrean in a very desirable way.
It’s also incredible with my HD 660S which I just tried for a short while. Especially with its analog crossfeed thing turned on, it gives the 660S an actual soundstage, and a substantial boost in visceral impact… I guess I should give it a couple of weeks before sharing any real impressions, because right now this is just the best thing that exists on this planet in the realm of audio for me.
But yeah, even though my current thoughts are greatly amplified by the excitement of this new piece of gear, I can at least say with certainty that this is an amp that absolutely deserves to be taken into serious consideration by those who are in the market for an amp with this kind of budget.
As one who recently understands the joy of a new amp it’s a great feeling. Lots of people interested in that one. Please post impressions when you feel able.
It’s pretty in an understated way. What tubes you running?
Yeah, the biggest mistake I made when auditioning headphones was plugging the Empyrean into an AudioValve Solaris just for fun… And so the hunt for a more affordable tube amp began haha… First tube amp I’ve ever owned too, just felt like doing it right the first time around. So far I’d say I made the right choice, but I’ll leave that judgement for when I’m over the honeymoon phase haha.
The tubes that come with it are:
- matched pair of driver tubes PsVane CV-181 Mk2 “Gold” /or PsVane “Silver” *
- matched pair of power tubes 6N13S (NOS) *
I got the Gold tubes.
My first tube amp was the Starlett so I know the vibe. The NOS tubes look to be in pristine condition aesthetically. Psvane tubes always look good. They make a rectifier I may try at one point.
Yeah the Starlett is another amp I’ve heard great things about. I’ve seen it being compared directly to the Euforia, so I’m sure it has to be fantastic to be compared against and even prefered over the Euforia by some. I just had to stick with what I have the opportunity to audition and knowing where to end the search. Too many great amps I haven’t had the opportunity to hear, but so far I can’t say that bothers me at all haha.
And yeah, those NOS tubes have some minor signs of having existed for quite some time, but overall they’re free from any scratches or stains. Slight bit of corrosion around the edge of the black sleeves, but that’s about all I can find.
Feliks Audio does include a list of compatible tubes for rolling them out, and they seem to be supportive of tube rolling too. I’ve heard of tube amp manufacturers calling people dumbasses for wanting to replace the stock tubes, so it’s nice to see Feliks Audio has a more agnostic stance on tube rolling. I think I’ll be perfectly happy with the stock tubes for a good while though, can’t really think of anything I might want to change about how it sounds right now.
It’s nice you got to audition it. Bought the Starlett blind but am happy.
Tube rolling is fun but I can see how one can get carried away by it. Keeping stock tubes is probably smart. Nice that they gave you options if you do choose to change.
Things NOT to do when tube rolling Feliks amps:
(meaning wtf)!!!
What are those adapters? Is that amp able to manage the different voltages/currents to be correctly delivered to each tube through those adapters? It looks like some voodoo sh*t! Gotta check them out for my WA33…hahaha I’ll have 911 on speed dial before trying and some fire extinguishers nearby!
It must not be easy to describe the effect of each tube on the sound of that amp. This is just intriguing…very much so, I must say!
Ah yes, the infamous Christmas tree tube pic. That’s just complete nonsense there. Fire Marshall level stuff.
I don’t know exactly.
No. This is how you melt power transformers.
Oh Lord, what have I done…
My statement to the fire fighters will start with: “So there’s this Professor in our online headphone community…”
… who told me NOT to do this, BUT…"
Your just a pyromaniac. Admit it.
“And what’s this professor’s name?”
“Professor Falkin.”
“Professor Falkin, like in War Games…?”
How about a nice game of chess?
