I don’t know why but I’ve never been a fan of instrumental rock or pop music (I like Classical music, so I can only imagine it’s an unconscious bias). I was playing around on my free trial of Amazon HD and somehow ended up on Yellow Magic Orchestra’s Solid State Survivor.
Even though I knew I would hate it, I thought what the hell, I’ll give it a shot since it’s free, and can then pat myself on the back that at least I tried something new. Well what do you know, after my 4th listen of that album in 24 hours, I guess I do like instrumental music.
With this album as my starting point, if anyone has any recommendations for the next album or two in order to continue exploring electronic music, by YMO or anyone else, I would appreciate it.
I haven’t dove into the Romanian minimal stuff yet, but dig the sound of this. The past few months have been a lot of Andrew Weatherall type stuff for me, so this will be a nice change!
I’ve only gotten into Romainian/minimal recently but it’s kind of taken over my listening the last few months. Here are a few choice tracks for you:
The great thing is that a lot of this stuff is available in hi def (up to 24K flac) through Bandcamp. Here is a link to my collection on Bandcamp if you’re interested in exploring. Cheers!
@Deepy you are Cushing it with the awesome electronic tracks! I am playing catch up trying to film and edit like crazy will drop some new stuff here soon!
Glad you enjoy it. It’s fun to share new tracks that really hook me. My passion for music was reignited when I heard Kavinsky’s Nightcall in the movie “Drive” (2011). I’ve been on a journey of discovery ever since and there’s so much awesome music coming out on Bandcamp all the time.
Carboot Soul is essential listening! One of my favourite trip-hop albums, this late 90’s period was quite excellent, so many superb albums around this time.
