I'm Sailing Away

Aft or forward pilot house?

The N76 and N86 we’re looking at are both aft configurations. The N52 was forward.

Those are some beautiful boats!

Here are some fun links for those interested in having a vessel (my old USCG ways coming out  ) I’m not worried about Torqs knowledge of this as we have talked about it before in person =)

https://www.uscgboating.org/regulations/navigation-rules.php

Lots of good info at those sites for those looking into getting a boat or to refresh on boating safety and laws/regulations etc =)

That’s some useful/interesting info. I like the little drawings/diagrams.

Do like the Grado’s to rock out on. Do have a hybrid tube rig to let my RS-1’s sing. Normal tube gear and Grado’s no bueno. Or at least not yet.

if you end up with either the N76 or the N86, I think we’ll have to start calling you Admiral_Torq. You’ll also need one of these to go with the boat, which might require a switch to IEMs.

Either is going to require a paid captain and crew for proper operation.

I’m entirely okay with that. I was never the guy that needed to control the remote or drive the boat. That I can is one thing, but that was never the attraction of larger vessels for me.

A note for the terminally self-entitled …

E-Mailing/PMing me with technical support demands is a waste of time.

You will be ignored.

I have never sold you anything. I have never worked for anyone that’s sold you any audio related gear. Talk to those that have. I don’t do technical/pre/post-sales support.

This applies ten-fold if you bought from anywhere other than headphones.com.

I am sad and disappointed that you even need to say this, in this place.

Quiiiiiick q @Torq.

This is regarding the Project Sunrise III I built for myself.

If I bypass the volume pot and only operate at unity gain, will… [sound of a drone crashing through my front door]

Oh juuuuunk, the Torqnado Drones have arrived! Why did I ever ask for [message ends]

Why though?

He contributes greatly to the technical and review side of these forums, and always talks with an authority of knowledge on the subjects. It’s only natural that people will contact him directly for help? It’s fine for him to ignore them, ain’t nobody got time for that, but if they are just asking technical questions I don’t see any malice in it.

Depends who exactly he is responding to. If they are asking for help on a subject he is knowledgeable in, thats purely it. An ask for help. If they are complaining to him or prodding him under some assumption he works at Headphones.com, yeah sure. Fuck them.

I have a feeling he is speaking to a specific person, while addressing / warning people going forward. There are some real nut cases in this hobby, and quite a few get real entitled and clingy.

Clingy? It’s not me is it? Tell me it isn’t me Falkin. I’ll PM and call you to make sure.

Also the feeling I get Re: Specific one or two.

Look over there! Squirrel!

So, on these N76/86 thingies… How long can you stay out of port on those? I’d imagine a week if stocked up?

It depends on exactly what you’re doing and how you’re doing it, but a full month is not really a problem even if you’re actively driving the thing every day. Sit moored, that can go way up. Only have two people and the crew on board, it goes up even further.

For example, with brimmed fuel tanks (7,000 gallons), you could maintain about 8 knots headway, 24/7 for three solid weeks (about 5,000 miles). The standard 900 gallon water tank is not really a limit, since you’ve got a water maker that can generate ~2,000 gallons a day. A bit of naughtiness and the holding tanks aren’t a limit either. Ample storage for more food than you’ll have other endurance.

And that assumes you don’t moor up offshore and do pump outs, and re-stock, etc. out of port/via tender. You can swap crews the same way, so their endurance doesn’t have to be a limit, so really maintenance is the real limiting factor. These are effectively expedition-grade vessels as much as luxury toys.

I certainly wouldn’t call it malice … perhaps “thoughtlessly inappropriate” or “not really aware of how to make forums work well for everyone.”

tl/dr: In general, only send PMs to people you know well.

A general design feature of a forum is that, if one posts a question to the entire board, then anyone with knowledge and time can step forward and help. AND any answers provided are thereafter available to anyone who has a similar problem. No specific person is in any way obligated or expected to donate his/her precious time to someone’s problem. By and large, the people with the most on-point knowledge and experience relevant to the question will answer, because they can do so quickly and easily. So this normal process of seeking help publicly is efficient for everyone.

In contrast, a direct PM asking for help, particularly to someone you don’t know well, puts the recipient in an awkward situation. No answer can be perceived as rude or uncaring, and even if the recipient has available time to respond reasonably quickly, he/she may not know the answer off the top of the head, so some non-trivial amount of time & effort could be involved.

So for all the reasons above, when one needs help, write a careful problem statement and post it so all the experts can see it and weigh in, as appropriate.

(And let Torq concentrate on finding his vessel and preparing for his journey.)

Sorry this is a bit preachy. I’m not targeting anyone in particular with my comments.

Thoughtlessly inappropriate is the backbone of our society haha.

What an interesting time in the world to be doing this. This thread is fascinating.

@Torq I took this last weekend and thought of you, and how I’m thinking for selfish reasons posting these signs all around any boat you get
