New Here? This Is The Spot To Introduce Yourself

Hi my audio addiction is well very OLD. I’m 75 and wonder what your thoughts are on a possible upgrade of Hifiman EF499 to an Eversolo Z8 to drive HE1000 V2? I’m into playing lossless FLAC files of alternative music. Looking forward to the group discussions.

Can’t…reply…now… .
Tony Bennett record…on…the…Magnavox.

just got in. In Smyrna DE, would like to connect with someone near me who could test my Hifiman HE-560 V4’s (planar magnetic) which I bought used…have been enjoying the better fidelity but would like “another set of ears” with knowledge to listen to them to test them.
Just got a Magnius (Schiit) and am using Cobalt Dragonfly.
-73, some hearing loss (Led Zeppelin/many other concerts, assembly line, DJ, etc.) use BTE hearing aids
Just bought Truthear EIMs (may come today) and wonder if anyone has experience using both (BTE hearing aids and EIMs together). I am willing to take the Phonac hearing aids out in order to get a seal IF needed.
Part of reason I bought EIMs was to fly under radar when driving (instead of Headphones). (yesterday) Wife looked up the law and Delaware is OK with headphones!
-woodworker, so may use the EIMs under ear muff hearing protection when in shop
[have not looked around this site, just jumped into saying hi/asking for help]

Welcome -
I go through Smyrna when I go to OC MD on vacation. Nice location. But I’m a bit far - live in Lancaster. I have the HE560 v2, and they sound OK with a Dragonfly Cobalt.

I think @Resolve has an EQ curve for them that you might try.

Hi. some learning curve going on here…I will try to figure that resolve suggestion out. It almost sounds like I can change the “EQ”/something like one IN the cobalt? You are welcome to stop by if it fits. I could ride up w the phones if you are ok with that. Most music sounds great on them …perhaps it was distortion IN the gram parsons song.? Maybe nothing to worry about.
Good talking with you…302 5983014. I go to sleep at 9. Just watched
Silver Linings Playbook.

I tried to search for EQ curve on HP site but didn’t find what you referred to. I realize I do not know my way around the site/group yet. interested in that idea…have used the EQ in Music app on mac a little
thanks

I think Resolve measured version 4 of the HE560, which could be tuned a bit differently (esp. in the treble?) than version 2. I’m basing this on some older graphs of the HE560 by Oratory1990 and Inner Fidelity.

You could try requesting some EQ info here or in the above HE560 topic…

…but it doesn’t appear that Headphones.com currently has any measurements for V2.

All of the graphs of the HE560 look a bit depressed in the upper mids though around 2 kHz, which is fairly common on HiFiMan planars. And they do not have much of a boost in the sub-bass, even though they extend well into the lower frequencies. So those might be two possible areas to consider targeting with some EQ.

Treble response does not look consistent between different versions, so it’s hard to know what to advise there. The older models appear less bright than the V4 though.

David,
(still not doing great on finding stuff in HP com., even the EQ info you pointed to) but what you suggested helped me to find this in chatgpt (Hope this wasn’t TMI!) you can skip to the bottom if you like
The HiFiMan HE-560 v4 and Dragonfly Cobalt are a solid combination, with the HE-560 having a neutral, detailed sound and the Dragonfly Cobalt offering a clean, dynamic output. To enhance this pairing using EQ, you can focus on addressing any subtle frequency response gaps in the headphones. Here’s a suggested EQ setting to fine-tune the sound:

  1. Sub-Bass (20 Hz - 80 Hz):
  • Boost: +3 to +5 dB
  • The HE-560 can benefit from a slight sub-bass boost to add a bit more depth and rumble without overwhelming the clarity.
  1. Mid-Bass (80 Hz - 250 Hz):
  • Flat or slight boost: +1 to +2 dB
  • The bass region of the HE-560 is quite balanced, but a minor boost can provide warmth if you find it a bit too lean.
  1. Lower Mids (250 Hz - 500 Hz):
  • Flat or cut: 0 to -1 dB
  • The lower mids are generally well-represented in the HE-560, so you might not need much adjustment here.
  1. Upper Mids (1 kHz - 4 kHz):
  • Cut: -2 to -3 dB
  • This region can be slightly forward on the HE-560. A small cut helps prevent harshness, especially with vocals and instruments.
  1. Presence Region (4 kHz - 6 kHz):
  • Flat: Leave as is or minor adjustment
  • The HE-560 already has good detail retrieval here, so it usually doesn’t require much adjustment unless specific tracks feel too bright.
  1. Treble (6 kHz - 10 kHz):
  • Cut: -2 dB
  • A slight treble reduction can tame any potential sharpness and sibilance, especially in brighter tracks.
  1. High Treble/Air (10 kHz - 20 kHz):
  • Boost: +2 to +3 dB
  • Adding a touch of air here can enhance the sense of space and clarity without making the sound fatiguing.

This EQ setting should help maintain the clarity and precision of the HE-560 while adding warmth and taming any harshness. Adjust these settings slightly based on personal taste and specific music genres.

The suggestions for the bass and sub-bass on the HE560 are probably ok.

The upper mids are actually recessed around 2 kHz. So you probably don’t want to cut those back any more. If anything, a boost of a couple dB might be more appropriate there.

The ear gain region around 3-4 kHz appears sufficiently bright though. And maybe even a tad too bright. It’s hard to be sure though for your model, since we don’t have good verified V2 graphs.

Can’t really comment intelligently on the treble without better graphs. It doesn’t look overly bright though on the older HE560 graphs imo. Generally speaking.

thanks for your help
trying what you suggested
and “playing by ear” some too

Hello,

New here!

My current daily drivers for speakers are the Kanto Ora’s, for headphones I swap between the Meze 99 Neo (for fun) and the Audeze Maxwell (for gaming, general use). I have also use some Google Pixel Buds 2 at the gym and for commuting.

I enjoy mostly EDM and Hip-Hop with some Rock/Metal and R&B mixed in there. So I tend to enjoy a warmer or more V-Shaped sound signature.

Topics I’m interested in currently are budget options for DACs/AMPs (or combo units) to expand my desktop setup and headphone collection. If anyone has any recommendations I’d be more than happy to hear some suggestions. Also trying to look into my next upgrade for headphones, but that will be a little bit further down the line but by all means let me know any suggestions based on my other headphones and listening preferences!

Happy to be a part of the community!

Welcome. You’ll find many people willing to help here. I wish I had the willpower to actually go to the gym. I find I do for a few years, then something happens. Pulled hamstring. Covid. Hernia or AFIB (I’m supposed to be officially old) and I get off track and it’s months or a year before I try again.

EDM - Lots of EDM folks here. I like where it crosses into electronica. Rezz, Deadmau5, Yello, Jean Michael Jarre. And of course for testing low bass Trentemøller (Chameleon). I like it in the car. Which I consider to be sort of an extra-large headphone. That costs too much. Now of only someone can help me find out how to improve the sub in my car… Not an easy task with a modern EV.
I’m rambling because it’s late. We used to have a guy here that always welcomed everybody, but he’s been quiet for months. I’m CHANNELING @ValentineLuke

WELCOME ask questions. we’re friendly.

Hello! I’m David, and I’ve been into the headphone hobby for a few years now. My current main headphone is an Audeze LCD-X that I absolutely love with EQ. I’m about to retire from the Air Force and am on the search for a high end headphone for myself as a retirement gift. Something premium and unique. I’m not necessarily chasing “better” sound. I was originally thinking Meze Empyrean IIs, but I think that would simply replace my LCD-Xs. So I was thinking something to complement them instead.

I have a pretty nice budget for this ($4K is the limit) but I was kind of thinking stabilized ZMF Bokehs when they release those in a few weeks for ZMF November. I keep getting tempted by the Calderas or Atriums though.

The other pair of headphones I own that are really special are Sash Tres (the 45ohm variant). They come across a lot like the Audezes to me (both with EQ) - maybe a hair less detailed, and a little more spacious. They’re also a fair bit harder to drive.

I’m not a believer for DACs/amps/cables/etc. I’m happily running everything I have off of a JDS Labs Atom stack. I might upgrade to an Element model at some point for that volume knob and the convenience of an all-in-one unit.
