The Off Topic

This is, honestly my biggest blocker from listing things for sale  I probably could have gotten rid of most of my stuff I want to, if it wasn’t for my extreme dislike of dealing with the “internets people trying to buy my stuff”

I’m about to buy this ZT0223 Gaylen, don’t have it yet. It gets very mixed reviews as some really love it, but others say the hole under the jimping weakens the blade, and others criticize the 5 holes at the handle. I’m sure I’ll get it since I likely won’t stress it. $300 USD.

One wonders in what context it “weakens the blade”?

Prying the hood off a car maybe?

What are these internet-types doing with their knives?

It’s a pretty-folder.

I bet 90% of the clowns making such comments have never pushed a knife to its limits in practical situations.

If you need more blade-strength than something like that would give, save yourself a bunch of money, suck up the size/weight, pick up a BK2 and a decent stone, and hack your way through everything you’ll ever need beyond ultra-fine whittling work …

And for some reason, that reminds me of the “pen fanatics” that can’t write in cursive, nor manage any level of reasonable calligraphy, pontificating on style, flow, smoothness or ink-delivery … when all they’re doing is sticking the things in boxes after a couple of sentences scribbling on 80 lb copy-paper.

I wouldn’t worry about this hole – the round Spyderco holes have a minimal impact. However, I recall that Spyderco said an open top cut above the hole does cause issues. I’d never buy or trust this SOG, for example:

[The only SOGs I’d buy are the fixed blades.]

Enjoy your ZT.

Exactly this.

The internet nerds are right, there are a few choices here that are aesthetic over practical, and it’s not particularly good steel at this price point, but if you like the way that it looks it will be just fine as an EDC.

Few things in life are more arbitrarily priced than jewelry, watches, knives, and other luxury fashion goods. I never care much about purchase price if there’s a proven resale market and predictable residual value.

Sure–but there are real material and process cost differences between a knife badly finished and heat treated in 440c, and one that takes M390, Elmax, or ZDP-189 to engineering limit.

I don’t use the knives I have as pry-bars, but I am nerdy enough about sharpening that I care about edge retention.

Blimey, Mate, if you need more blade-strength than something like that would give, you don’t need a knife, you need one of these:

You reminded me of something neat of which I recently learned. The blades aren’t particularly sharp to the touch but these things cut amazingly well.

I’m fairly certain someone called me this at a bar once.

Not that easy to EDC, but I agree-- super effective.

I couldn’t figure out where to post this. I am glad to be back in our community. I’ve been incognito for awhile, due to some health problems. I look forward to become more and eventually as much as I was a participant of our great community, second to now. Tom

I got one of these Miles Davis editions. Most of the Mont Blancs are meh to me, but this has stayed with me for a few years. It’s well made and balanced, which is a plus.

have a pry-bar in the back of my car and a Terävä Skrama from varusteleka - this is more for chopping … but takes a beating with the flexible steal

as EDC got my Giant Mouse Ace Biblio Micarta - love all Jesper Voxnaes designs but this was perfect in my EDC usage - ergonomics beat my spydercos and I need micarta in my hand

in rotation …
Spydercos PM2 all black, blurple Para 3 S110V and the UKPK
Benchmade 319 Proper micarta

Letherman and Vic Multitool

some Vic Alox Classics

any one into head- or flashlights? - … another time maybe

pens in EDC the obvious brass Space Pen and
one of my loved … a Ti2 Techliner Pen - Acid Wash Copper with Phosphor Bronze Clip
or
TiScribe-Bolt Copper by urban survival gear
prefer copper and brass over titan

Edit:
for beater watch I use every day since 2012
my Seiko SKX 007 with different Zulu wristbands
before there where all sorts of digital Casio G-Shocks I still own like the “Heavy Metal”

This Nitecore MH20GT (1000 lumens) has the longest throw for size that I’ve ever experienced in a handheld light. I have a couple of Fenix lights of similar size that are rated at 1600 lumens, which don’t begin to compare. Even allowing for floody-vs-spot, the Nitecore beats all. One way I guage the output is inside a room aiming the beam at the ceiling, to see which lights up the whole room better.

Nice choice dalethorn!

Nitecore made a few really compelling lights
I also thought about the MH20GT and waited for a warmer LED Version- like I own a Nitecore headlight with neutral like “daylight” (CRI) + 20 Lumen red light- which lasts for a few nights in our camp

I prefer floody and something around 5000- 5500 Calvin neutral coloured light for mixing photgraphy flashes with 1 or 2 flashlights like the Emisar D4 Titan with Nichia 219C LEDs or the short 18350 Version with warm 4000K LEDs (my EDC)
Emisar is a community based product with the best user interface I know. And if needed you can fire up a cigar

The Manker U12 is with the 20700 batterie my camp light for long nights- 870 Lumen for over 3hours without overheating- also neutral warmth- I don’t like cold light in the night after a few tests a few years ago

The last one is the old rainbow S42s with the same Nichia 219c LEDs and a standard 3/8 screw mount in the back - so you can use with tripod mount

no I forgot one - Massdrop copper AAA light with again a neutral Nichia LED

My dude, this is classy AF. The Para2 and the Benchmade 940 have been my top EDC choices for years.

Who makes that wallet? It’s lovely.
